Some may remember after the fallout of Peter Jackson New line and MGM began courting other directors to take the project. One that apparently was asked was Sam Raimi. The la times today said something to make it seem like Raimi might have taken it:

Quote
In a move that would have ramifications for several major multi-nationals, and millions of fans, "Spider-Man" maestro Sam Raimi has been telling associates, as well as his corporate masters at Sony, that he is thinking of directing "The Hobbit," the prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork, "The Lord of the Rings." At least two top-level insiders – who declined to be named -- have heard the words out of the director's mouth.

As I said on GAF, I think Raimi would be a good fit.
As I didnt say on GAF, after KK, I have no desire to ever see another PJ "epic" again.

I liked King Kong but I rather see Raimi's take on the universe than another Jackson one personally. It will feel more fresh rather than LOTR Trilogy 2.0

As I said on GAF..

It's going to sad to watch this trainwreck in real time

Raimi is a good director and has a longer pedigre than Jackson, but I don't think people understand just how much Jackson meant to the success of LOTR. Not only did he bring together an amazing group of dedicated people to work on the movie, he also spent years working on the script - which was great.

Raimi may be the "better" directer depending on one's taste, but I highly doubt he can come up with a better script than what Jackson/Boyens/Walsh did; in fact I wouldn't be surprised at all if they already had a partial screenplay ready for the Hobbit, just in case.

I'll believe it when I see it, as Raimi has been rumored to be attached to so many projects.

This rumor has been going on since November and TheOneRing.net which is probably the mot reliable lotr site out there is the one who started it.

I'm not saying it's not a reliable report, it probably is, but - again - he's attached to so many projects.  He's becoming the Q.T. of projects (where usually those reports are true, it's just he's got A.D.D. or something).

I think the likelihood of it happening is slim due to the rights.  I highly doubt Raimi would want to jump into The Hobbit right after Spider-Man 3, as he said he'd like to do a smaller film, and by the time he'd be ready - P.J. will have the rights back in his driver seat.

Another thing: Raimi is a very respected director who isn't going to rush out a movie for a disgruntled studio. As I said, this a going to be a trainwreck once New Line starts speeding things up, and I highly doubt Raimi would want anything to do with that.

He's too smart for that

Even if raimi backs out you know New line rather make this film with ANYONE rather than lose the rights. They have to start production by the end of 2008 and new line seems to be willing to do anything to do that. It could become a train wreck of a film but new line will get this film started by the end of 2008 regardless who they have directing it.

Could? It WILL be a trainwreck. New Line is a complete joke. Jackson essentially kept the company alive with the success of FOTR and this is how they treat him?

Worse yet - this shows just how little respect they have for Tolkien or his work, and I wish his estate had the power to pull the plug on this inevitable disaster

How could Jackson ever have gotten the power pull the plug? lotr was a studio project and he was a director/writer for hire.

Nothing comparable to say a lucas and star wars.

Tolkien's estate :lol
JRR Tolkien himself sold the film rights to Paul Zantez in the early 70's(tolkien said he wanted christopher lee to play gandalf lol)

Zantez then sold them to New line. However if New line does not use the hobbit by the end of 2008 they got back to Zantez.

So in the end
Blame JRR Tolkien.  :-*

To be honest, I don't think a Hobbit movie would even be that well received without Peter Jackson at the helm. Not to say I'm a Jackson fanboy by any means, but alot of LotR nerds are gonna be pissed if someone else does the Hobbit film.

And the lack of quality is going to turn people off. A lot of people went to see LOTR because of the overwhelmingly positive critic reception the movies got; they wanted to see if it was worth the hype. And considering each movie grossed more than the previous one it seemed like many people became "loyal" to the movies, expecting them to be good based on the previous ones. This can't be said of the Matrix.

I remember a few years ago where every year was awesome because you knew at the end an awesome LOTR movie would be waiting. Those were the days. I skipped the final day of school to go see TTT and ROTK. Hell a couple days after seeing TTT on day one me and my buddy left a end of semester celebration dinner (where we got awards in front of our parents lol) early to see the movie again.

Well we only have raimi's word to go on and trustworthy sources say he wants to do it and we know he was offered it in Nov.

He may very well back out or get distracted by some other project. But "for now" he seems intent on doing it.

It's not about the fucking source. How can you possibly think any respected director is going to walk into this trainwreck and allow New Line to rush things along?
