Is True detective season 2 worth watching to laugh at?
« on: February 02, 2018, 11:13:32 PM »
I was thinking about this scene from TD season 1

And how fucking amazing that a scene like this is in a TV show. The cinematography and so much else is great for the first season.

Is there anyone here that likes season 2? Season 2 felt like a Fargo ripoff from the first 30 minutes, never returned. Is it bad enough to watch to see how bad it is?
OH!

No. Just find a YT compilation of Vince Vaughn’s worst quotes.

Season 2 is enjoyable. The hate for it is kind of weird.

Judge for yourself.

This is my opinion.

I have a friend who likes it though so maybe mileage varies....

But yeah I thought it was pretty terrible. The first season had times where it was a bit pretentious but it never overwhelmed the show.

The second season is so up its own ass its unbearable to me.

It's definitely worth watching if you're looking for a good laugh. The dialogue that comes out of Vince Vaughn's mouth is so fucking bad, it becomes James Franco So Good dot gif. The season is pretty bad though.

I remember at the end of every episode feeling like things were finally set up and things were coming together and the next ep would be the one to take it to the next level. And it never happened. And there was a lot more baggage to deal with than in season 1 in regard to groaner lines and scenes.

Season 1 was some damn good television. Cary Fukunaga is really talented.

Looking forward to Maniac on Netflix.

But yeah Season 2 of TD isn't great. If you're really bored and desperate for something to watch, it has some entertaining moments though.

If you compare it to s1, it falls short. However, on it's own, it's still a good noir story with decent acting and the best performances Rick Springfield and, more impressively, Rachel McAdams have ever performed. Taylor Kitsch is kind of wasted, sadly. There's good stuff, and the show is worth watching. Unfortunately, it had to try to live up to the fucking career-reviving magic of Harrelson and McConnaaahhhhey in s1, and it does not manage that.

Absolutely terrible, made even moreso by the masterpiece that was season 1.
However, you may find some enjoyment with it if you stick through till the end. Although then again, certain complaints are exacerbated by watching the season to completion, as you'll notice how many plot elements weren't developed or were simply thrown away.

Well, time to go rewatch season 1 (again).

First episode was meh. Second episode was great. After that it fluctuated between meh and terrible, with a couple great moments mixed in. Very disappointing. That being said I had this weird urge to re-watch it. IMO the bud of a good season is hidden in there somewhere, but too much bloat and overwrought dialogue destroyed it. First off, setting the show in an imaginary city was a mistake when there are so many real cities where the transportation industry was founded in shady shit (Detroit is a perfect example). Second, having four main characters was a major mistake. The most compelling characters were Farrell and Kitsh's characters. Maybe having 3 characters would have been fine, just to avoid comparisons to the first season; Vaughn would have been my choice. Rachel McAdams wasn't bad, it's just that four was too much and you could have erased her arc pretty easily.

I won't get into spoilers, but the ending of the second episode made me think "ok this is gonna get amazing." Instead they went the opposite.

It's not even remotely ha-ha bad. The only joy I got from it was hate watching it along with everyone else as it aired. "It can't possibly be worse this week." "Oh, it was actually much worse."

As to the topic, I agree with PD- there's a good season of the show hidden in there somewhere, but even if you account for the inevitable drop off from Season 1, there were a bunch of things working against it:

1) Pizzaman buying into his own hype and trying to do too much too quickly. He would have benefited from a partnership with just one director like he had from season 1. Instead he was the sole voice and it suffered.
2) Too many main characters. The three cops and Vince Vaughn? Too much.
3) Shitty casting with Vince Vaughn. I get the character they were going for but he was wrong for the role.

There's other shit but those are the main ones IMO.

Also can't forget he's from Louisiana and it was clear that S1 explored settings, people, and themes he was intimately familiar with. Then S2 is in this imaginary Californian town.

Remember how Nicky Pizza was so petty he threw in a fake Cary Fukunaga who was a total asshead? Hilarious

Fukunaga hasn't done much since then, outside of Beasts Of No Nation (which was amazing). He was gonna do It but they got rid of his script.

I always wondered how much of Fukunaga remained in It. I would have given my middle nut to see his take on it.

Going to start True Detective tonight, wish me luck

The total package of Season 1 is good to great TV, season 2 is  :donot

I just hope David Milch did enough to right the ship for season 3... Now thats a writer that should have HBO giving him a blank check and lots of resources to get his career back on track.

The main case of season 1 kind of sucks but the characters, atmosphere, acting and chemistry are amazing. The main case of season 2 is actually good, the characters are decent and acting ranges from good to Vince Vaughn. The sad part is that Vince Vaughn really tried, he just doesn't have the talent.
