the portuguese have a word called "saudade". if you go to lisbon you can feel the place drenched in it, from the fado music coming out of cafes to the distressed and fading colonial architecture.

wiki describes it as: "a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return"
