I don't really know much about Gamergate apart from bits and pieces of it, and I was unaware it was still going on. But I was saying based on my anecdotal experience that most people I know in the local gaming community are unaware of it. Harassing women is obviously despicable in both the real and virtual world, and I'm lucky that my gaming groups tend to (mostly) be well adjusted adults who know better.

You're not talking with crazy people, you're just posting on a forum that leans very heavily to one side and you're outnumbered. I have loads of mates who play video games as their main hobby and we wouldn't cringe or think too much about someone using the the word 'gamer'. I'm from the UK.

Gaming is a young hobby after all, and it definitely went through its awkward teenage phase. Now it's fully mainsteam I think people want to distance themselves from the 'gamer' tag, that people adopted back in the days when it was an unpopular hobby and has become associated with some toxic behaviour. I'll still say I'm a gamer though, because saying 'someone who plays video games' is just irritatingly long winded, and using that in day to day conversation comes across like you're waiting for the opportunity to explain your thought process or start a debate. That in itself is cringey as fuck.

RE was formed as a spin off of NeoGAF, itself a spin off of GAF, which features Gaming in the name. It's unreasonable to expect that posters on RE would play games.

An old joke going back to pre-NeoGAF days was that GAF members didn't play games.  It's kind of true.  Except what has changed is that all they do now is spend their time getting outraged and upset over everything.  It's overwhelmingly-negative and can't be good for their mental health. 

Pretty sure 95% of the people that made GAF what it once was have long moved on anyway.  Either they're still here, SLAENT, on twitter/FB, maybe Reddit...or are just done with this nonsense entirely.

How long until Besada rats out Tiesto and the ban goes from 3 days to 'duration pending'.

RE was formed as a spin off of NeoGAF, itself a spin off of GAF, which features Gaming in the name. It's unreasonable to expect that posters on RE would play games.

An old joke going back to pre-NeoGAF days was that GAF members didn't play games.  It's kind of true.  Except what has changed is that all they do now is spend their time getting outraged and upset over everything.  It's overwhelmingly-negative and can't be good for their mental health. 

Pretty sure 95% of the people that made GAF what it once was have long moved on anyway.  Either they're still here, SLAENT, on twitter/FB, maybe Reddit...or are just done with this nonsense entirely.

Why even keep the old GAF subfolder structure, I wonder?

The new dumb kids thought all our old 'jokes' were serious.
PlayStation has no games, NPD doesn't track the GameCube hut, all FPS fans are dudebro's etc. etc. .

Years later those are 'serious' talking points. Which is why I have so much trouble conversing over the internet these days. Because everyone takes everything super seriously unless you put a big disclaimer in front of it.

There's a few of the 'old guard' still on there.  Just mentioning the place...can't say I go there very often-  Their layout is awful.
