Oh jeez, now don't protest because it's a school night? It's amazing any progress has been made in this country. They shouldn't have dumped the tea in the harbor because it was really good tea and it would be a shame to waste it
I'm drawn in by their historical metaphors because of how often they run perpendicular to what they're trying to express. The Boston Tea Party wasn't the only protest against the Tea Act. Usually the ships from Britain were simply not allowed to land because nobody would pay the duty so they went home. In Boston, the Governor demanded the law be followed so the ship couldn't leave without being unloaded and paying the duty. They wouldn't pay the duty for obvious reasons, so the Governor wouldn't let the ship leave. So for some reason that's still unclear a bunch of people decided to dump the tea in the bay.
The thing is. The Governor was trying to get a reaction of just this sort
so that Britain would send forces to take a hard line with the colonists and crack down on them for defying the Tea Act and their other protests against the crown. It worked, Parliament voted to punish the city of Boston collectively at the cost of $2 million for the destroyed tea. Even the generally pro-colonist members were outraged at this destruction of property and voted near unanimously for the punishment. Parliament even turned down numerous rich people
willing to pay for the tea because their ultimate goal was enforcing the law on the colonies. The colonists obviously viewed all of this as insane and part of a pattern and thus things continued to escalate.
It's exactly an example of what the person was trying to suggest to him, that emotional and irrational protest will make things worse and accomplish nothing, and yet he's holding it up to defend his position.
