Europe should be taking women and children only. No single men without families.
The sad thing is, they mostly can't flee. Women on the run are a target both for government soldiers, other refugees, human traffickers and even workers at migration centers.
There's widespread rape in the camps in Syria, Turkey and other places and it's not much better during the journey. They opt to stay at home as that is the safest.
They and the young children also lack the physical strength to make the journey (no I'm not saying women are weak, I'm saying that if you've spend your days huddled up indoors and sharing what little food you have with your kids for years you're not in the best physical shape to walk for miles and miles). Another reason men are fleeing is the draft. In Syria the men were drafted to fight by Assad so some fled. But also rebel groups and ISIS recruit new meat from the male population.
A safe zone in the region, (not administered by Erdogan) would've been the best solution. Buy/rent a piece of land close to the conflict zone and build/develop a city/community for refugees there.
When the war ends, they return. All too late for that now. We were too busy building fences in Hungary and/or having NGO's double as ferry services for human traffickers.
