IIRC the dude's biggest problem with Apu was that he was the only indian on TV for many years, so that's all anyone knew.  It's not specifically a Simpsons problem, it's everyone else's problem for not providing more/better indian representation.  Would it have been better if Apu didn't exist?  Also would he have been funny, interesting and distinct enough if he had Smithers' voice all along?

Plus Apu was rarely if ever cast in any sort of negative light.  Unlike basically all the rest of the cast.  What if he was greedy or ignorant or lazy?  All sorts of bad traits he avoided and his voice is the thing you get up in arms about?

Apu can still be salvaged if voiced by an Indian and having character development beyond the status quo of being a corner shop clerk. A complex and interesting three dimensional character that doesn't espouse stereotypes is possible. Subvert the stereotypes. Just because the medium is 2D, doesn't mean the characters need to be. But I don't see the Simpsons showrunners being open to that with this knee-jerk response.

Exactly -- he was a voice of reason, and the foci for revealing many characters failings and ineptitude.  They're literally just railing against him for having a distinct accent (that is arguably, very accurate).  I always thought the reason people never complained about "Its-a me Mario" was because he was an endearing lovable guy, albeit cast as a squat, mustachioed, blue-collared Italian American stereotype.  But, I guess it was all bullshit -- it's about passing the paper bag test.

I mean it. For instance Homer isn't just some dolt, he's simple-minded but also wants to do right by his family. Homer the character is at his best when in spite of his failings and clumsiness he tries to do or even manages to do the right thing.

I don't think Apu has to be well developed because he's just some minor character. But the early Simpsons had a lot of depth to it. It could be a really touching show.

Simpsons was at its best when it ditched the focus on moralizing and delved into the absurd. They hit that sweet spot and staid there for a number of seasons. When they started trying to compete with shows like Family Guy at their brand of humor and became the Memesons is when they should have euthanized it.

Apu being a stereotype isn't an issue as much as how certain stereotypes effect minorities more than whites (or yellows in the Simpsons case).

Apu being the sole major representation for an Indian guy in American media made some people associate his characteristics towards the first brown guy they see, moreso than how people won't associate any fat bald guy with Homer, or cop with Wiggum. Chances are that your average American has met an overweight guy or a cop before. So I can see the Apu problem guy's point.

That's a dumb thing to say. The first 8 seasons of Simpsons were as good as they were precisely because, in addition to the original comedy, the characters were well developed, interesting, and even heartwarming.

That's the problem though. The characters don't have "development". They're already developed.

Like picture the show the same in every other respect, but Apu in particular is a bundle of positive character traits portrayed by an Indian American voice actor who speaks perfect midwestern American dialect.  Nothing negative ever happens to him because that would be punching down, and he's never the one moralizing or solving problems because that would be Magical Negro syndrome.  The tone of the show changes whenever he's on screen, because he has to be the representative.

Kinda;  it's because it's a verb and not a noun, as if it's something that happened to them as opposed to "who they are."

Used in that context it's an adjective though.  No one says that to imply it was a thing that happened to them, they just say it because it's a natural, reasonable word to say.  There's a reason so many allies say it and have to be corrected in every thread.  It just rolls off the tongue.  There's english language precedent in statements like "gendered pronouns" or "gendered nouns."

Honestly we should be eliminating both trangender and trangendered from the lexicon because both words out and "other" individuals as not being cis.  They are simply men and women.

I saw that post, too.  It reminded me about that "Why are liberals indifferent to trans issues" thread.  This is why.  I have a career, a life, responsibilities, etc.  In other words, I'm just an average ass person.  I happen to pay more attention to politics than a lot of other people and I get involved in issues beyond just typing about them.  It can be very time consuming because there are so many issues that matter.  And if one of those issues results in my constantly being admonished, chastised, or derided for using a term that seemingly has become not only obsolete but also offensive, overnight, determined by unknown people, then I'm going to take the time I've apparently been wasting and find another use for it.  I'll just stay out of that issue entirely.
