God luck mashing your way through Father Rodin fight, It's literally impossible.

No matter how good the combat in GoW is, it has zero chance of having Bayo and DMC combat depth and variety.

Anyways, I wish he didn't compare it to them. Different type of games with different goals in mind.

Personally, I don't consider being able to do different kinds of combos as depth. Variety absolutely. Skillful and nuanced definitely. But your approach is still the same. What exactly changes besides damage output or combo length in a game like DMC between someone button mashing to success and pulling off basic combos versus doing an insane combo and getting a high rating? Entering a fight in DMC as a newcomer or vet showcases different understandings of the combat but you're still approaching combat in the same manner either way

Like I consider what we've seen in God of War - the way you can blend ranged attacks with melee to lock down/stun/trip/etc enemies, how positioning is crucial to do how you can use enemies against eachother or call back your axe to strike enemies from different angles, the possibilities of different builds, and so on - as more depth than anything I've seen in a crazy DMC or Bayonetta combo video and certainly than anything in past God of Wars. Maybe I'm not viewing the subgenre from the right perspective, but I've never considered character action as a genre with much depth.

The best way to use videogame reviews is to be somewhat cautious of anything below 70% average. Videogame reporters are just random fanboys (not actual journalists) who usually dream of becoming the next PR person for their favorite company. So you'll get nonsense like "Citizen Kane of gaming" whenever a publisher tries to copy trite movies. Sincere 11/10 reviews. Or unreflected fapping over nostalgic IP like Zelda and Batman whenever they've been turned into Ubi-Tower games for a cheap faux-wow factor.
