I was really hungry and wanted breakfast so I go to this diner near me ( I haven't been to this place in like a year ) eat my eggs, waiter gives me the receipt. This place has you bring the receipt to the cashier at front of the diner. So i give her my card to pay and as I'm about to put my card in my wallet and leave she yells out " hey you're not going to tip? " She yells so loud everyone in the diner looks at me. I quietly tell her no and she yells out again "come on, you're not going to tip the waiter that just served you."  And I shake my head and of course I become the center of attention. For a second I almost was about to say fine take your tip but the way she just put me in the spotlight really pissed me off so I just left right away .

Fuck I just wanted something to eat and not be agonized this early in the morning.

I don't usually tip. Rarely do. I never liked the idea of tipping. But wtf at her for trying to get extra $1 from me like that

 

Are you 12? You live in the US, it doesnt matter if you like the system of tipping or not (I certainly not, I'd rather just pay more for my food and have the restaurant pay a living wage to their servers but thats a topic for another day). Fact of the matter if you live in the United States, or many other countries where tipping is expected, YOU HAVE TO TIP. Thats how servers make most of their goddamn money. I don't understand the 'always tippers'. People who feel compelled to tip anyone/everyone because of some secret shame they will get that this stranger might judge you.

I'll happily tip a waitress, masseuse or a bartender. But I'm not tipping a barista, barber or baggage handler. If your money is baked into the cost of the service or if the service you provide is so minimal, I'm not going to tip. It's also why I always get carry-out at chinese or pizza joints. Delivery people don't really deserve a tip for that job, so I just never put myself in a position where I don't tip them.

When I was working as a server I had no idea what I was supposed to do to be honest. Once I figured out I was screwing over the IRS I was afraid to do anything different for fear of getting audited. Once I figured out that the IRS isn't going to audit a 17 y/o making 15k a year I laughed at my younger self.

Though it's petty hard to massively underreport in today's industry where so much is done through credit cards and so much is digitized.

It's common practice that all credit card tips are reported by default and taxed, which probably composes about 70-95% of all transactions these days. I know when I was managing, you get reports that estimate what tips are expected to be based on sales, and servers have to tip out other people assisting them throughout the restaurant. Since management typically serves as an intermediary to that process it lets you see if what their claiming matches up realistically to what they are tipping out.
