Not in the slightest. You have a userbase overwhelmingly fixated on single-player big-name IPs, commenting on a company that switched from making those those to twitch-friendly GaaS titles and which controls a large and imperfect digital distribution service. Said company's two biggest games right now have millions of players world-wide but probably only a low double-digit number of players here. It's completely predictable that these threads go the way they do without requiring a Jim Sterling Thread-style reminder in every OP from now on.

I'm at a birthday party with my family and some friends. It's a birthday part for a 2 years old girl. They are giving beers for the adults.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love beer. I usually drink a couple of craft beers every weekend. I generally enjoy alcohol. But I never offered beer or alcohol at my girl's birthday parties.

I can understand the frustration of being emotionally attached to your platform of choice, so you have my word that these messages will not be viewed through the lens of moderation.

Neither Valve nor Steam are perfect; the list of issues worth discussing is not a small one. I can and have written a chapter on how I feel about the release process, for instance. But this isn't the thread for it, because this thread is about some dumb, fun factoid that shouldn't be causing any drama whatsoever.

Jerry Lawson was some sales guy that managed a design team of engineers that worked on a proprietary cartridge thing for the Fairchild system through a complex liason of work done by many people.   Wallace Kirschner and Lawrence Haskel, who worked for Alpex Computer Corporation licensed the technology to Fairchild, and after Fairchild licensed Alpex’s technology, a team that included engineers Ron Smith and Nick Talesfore refined the technology and turned it into a practical, commercial product.  He's kinda like The Legend of Elon Musk: in interviews he was always equivocating some version of events where he's the 'inventor' of the cartridge system when he managed a team that pretty much did all the work - it's clear in interviews he never really understood the nuts and bolts of it.   I think the guy went to school for a year, and I don't even think it was for anything related to engineering -- he pretty much landed a dream job on a sales team at a tech company and brilliantly transitioned himself.


Anyway, this guy is propped up on mountains because of his race, and it's incredibly patronizing to black people.

Maybe I somehow misinterpreted the scenario where I walked up to you with my group in order to thank you in person for the E3 offer, said hi, made eye contact, went in for a handshake, and then you took my hand but immediately spun a 180 while the handshake was still in progress to directly put your back to me, to gasps and aghast facial expressions from the people I was with. A little bit '60s comic book villain, but charming in its forthrightness, I will say.

This whole 'only buy them food, if not fuck them' is awful.  It's like the only thing humans need is food. Hell, sometimes even giving a bag of goods like toiletries, clothes, blankets, food, etc is harder on them because now they have to pack that shit back to a safe place to sleep and protect it from other people. Money is lightweight and can be used anywhere...if they buy drugs oh well they'll likely also buy other stuff they need. If everyone only gave food they'd have to eat what they could before it spoiled or carry a huge amount of weight everywhere. It doesn't make sense.

If that's how you really feel, then don't give anything. I think you are making a lot of assumptions about people you don't know, but fine, you don't HAVE to give anyone anything.

That doesn't change the fact that refusing to give money but instead offering food is insulting. I'm not going to judge you for not giving money to a homeless person (maybe you can't afford to give the money out, I dont know your situation like I don't know the homeless person's) but I am going to judge you for looking at a person who needs help and saying "I know better than you do what you need". You aren't treating them as an equal human being at that point, and that's fucked up.

This is crazy... it’s been several years since I’ve been on Bart and it was already getting overrun with the homeless but this is another level. Dudes nodding off in the middle of the walkway.

I had a guy come up to me at subway and asked me for money so he could eat. I told him no, but I would go in there with him and buy him whatever he wanted. He looked at me as if I was messing with him but I had him go in there with me. He was super happy and grateful.

While we are eating our sub he told me about how he ended up there - lost his job, his friends, and most of his family wouldn’t talk to him because he was addicted to drugs. He wanted to go back home to Ohio but couldn’t afford it. I gave him a couple of bucks to get the bus and told him to meet at greyhound the next day and I’d buy his ticket if he wanted it. I went back home and the next day I drove to Greyhound and he was there waiting for me. I bought him a ticket and gave him my number  just in case.  I didn’t hear from him for like two years. All of a sudden I got a call from him and it took me a bit to recognize his voice since I had forgotten about it - turns out he met up with family, got into rehab, and ended up getting a job and was getting his life back together. He offered to reimburse me for the money I spent on him and I told him to just donate it to a homeless shelter.  He thanked me and said that had I given him money he would’ve just spent it on drugs or alcohol. What he really needed was someone to listen to his story and have a little faith in him for another chance at life.

I’ve not heard from him since, but that’s when I started to just donate money to shelters and giving food to the food bank.  Unfortunately not all people will be like this guy, and the shelters would make that money go a long way at helping a lot more people.
