Kane & Lynch are still superior, obviously, but playing as a selfish, self-serving scumbag who does terrible things and hurts the people who put trust in him while convincing himself he's some kind of white knight was a good thing.

I always like WD1 more than WD2 in part because WD2 tried to make its characters "charming" and "likeable" instead of doubling down on bad people doing bad things to other bad people.

In 1996, 3D games and 3D cameras were not new; in fact, there were some games that had even done a decent job at both. However, it was Super Mario 64 that ended up becoming the blueprint for modern 3D game design, thanks to how it blazed the trail with its handling of movement in a polygonal 3D space, and, equally importantly, how it handled the camera in the 3D space.

One of the reasons that Mario 64 managed this was because of how considerate the camera was. It was contextualized in game so that it always felt like a tangible presence, but more importantly, it always ceded to the player. It had issues, especially in hindsight, but at the time, being pioneering, and with the hardware at its disposal, it was as good as was possible. It was a camera that ceded control to the player where necessary, but otherwise sought to ground the player in the 3D space by being as unobtrusive and invisible as possible. It was this last point that was its biggest achievement—it was a camera that managed to mostly frame the character, and the player didn’t have to think about it too much. It was this that managed to make it such a revolution in 3D space cameras.

Astro Bot has often been compared to Mario 64, but I had not even realized just how much merit the comparison holds at first. It was the first VR game I played, so I actually ended up taking it for granted. It was only after playing other VR games, such as RE7, where the camera ended up causing trouble for me (as well as inducing motion sickness), and later going back to Astro Bot, that its true genius struck me.

See, the camera in Astro Bot is, much like Mario 64, very unobtrusive. It’s contextualized in game, and it gets out of the way. It frames the action to firmly ground the player in the VR space, and you can manipulate your view where necessary, but otherwise the camera does the job, and you don’t even have to think about it.

The camera is utterly genius in terms of how considerate towards the player it is. It is always behind Astro, and only moves forward when he reaches the far side of the current space. This has multiple advantages—a) it means motion of the camera is actually limited, which is extremely important to keep player sickness at a minimum (the constant movement of the camera is the primary cause for motion sickness, because it’s rapid motion that your brain is processing disconnected from the absolutely static state of your body), and b) since the camera is largely static for large periods of time, you get the option to move the view and frame the action yourself as you navigate the VR space. it also does an amazing job of utterly grounding you in said VR space.

It’s actually extremely hard to explain the genius of Astro Bot. You need to first understand the context of VR space, then see how other games handle VR, and then and only then can you fully understand just how considerate in a very Nintendo-esque sense the camera is.

If VR is to become a mainstay of gaming, and god I hope it does, then I hope, I believe, Astro Bot’s camera is going to be what other VR game designers look to when they design their games. I am still not fully sure where I fall on the game as a platformer (still relatively early in the game, only two worlds done), but in terms of how it manages to tackle the issue of navigating and negotiations VR space, and grounding and framing the player within it? It’s absolutely stellar, and truly, VR’s Super Mario 64 moment.
