When I was a kid we rented a couple sega games and when we got 'em home my parents were like "wait a minute this one called Altered Beast seems a little violent, we're going to check it out first before you can play it, after you go to bed" and I was like aw mannn and I snuck out of bed to get a look at the game anyway and they caught me and I never got to play it

E3 has always had that two layer thing going on, with the conferences especially, where it's one part media spectacle and then the trade show part happening in the suites. I remember when everyone freaked out that year they cut the hall and stuff since it was useless expense when they had disallowed almost all non-"official" people.

I'm surprised it still only costs $250 to get in, especially with all the "independent media" types, it was $200 like fifteen years ago the two times I got offers to go. (Both EA and the website that offered me were gladly paying the badge cost from their probably over-allotment, obviously not the travel and lodging so I never went cuz do I look like Jeff Gerstmann with an illegal amount of money.)

I always assumed all these YouTubers are paying to get in and go. That's why I was baffled by Evilore's thing as he could have easily paid to go that one year.

In my case, I'm pretty sure they were over allotments given that I got offered (especially EA which probably gets boxes worth dumped on them), but I remember even back then you could pay and they'd let you in for practically no "valid" reason. But I wasn't going to pay for flying out to LA for it, though somebody else I "worked" with did and thought it was amazing to spend three days in a conference hall for some reason.

I know they lessened the rules a ton in recent years to where they let in pretty much anyone that pays. It's the conferences (and parties) you've needed actual invites to.

I am calm. And I'm quite aware that you are one of the very few voices of reason here. I saw something that was worthy calling out someone on it, I acted upon it. I saw it again on other thread, and so I did once again. The thing is that it's not my style to bury my head on the sand and not see when "our own" are acting like shit. The DCEU fans have an image problem and here on Era would be a good place to start changing the tide. When you say "everyone just chill" and don't confront that, you are allowing a toxic pattern to keep going. And while the films are "looking up", I don't think the fandom will get better unless we are willing to police ourselves more.

More than one year has passed, and unfortunately I don't think things got better, and a lot of the shit I said on the OP I'm witnessing right here on Era. It saddens me, but maybe to keep bringing this subject up might help us to keep ourselves in check. Here's some new articles on the same subject that were posted this year:

I honestly don't even think it's always conscious. The tribalism runs so deep that they actually buy into their own persecution complex and they legitimately believe that there's a bias against the products they love. I imagine people like that eventually seeing themselves like the "are we the baddies" gif:

 

I'm happy that creators like Rick and Morty's Justin Roiland are speaking up against this kind of behavior, but I don't think it's up for the creators to keep the fans in check. It's mostly on us. If you are a Star Wars fan, call out those that are assholes consciously or not. Same goes for DCEU fans, Marvel fans, etc..

Yeah I feel bad for old past me being so hopeful. But that only makes punished present me feel even more strongly on how fucking important this thread is, and how I'll annoy the fuck out of people shrugging it off shit like that here on Era by making this thread actually important so maybe things change for the better eventually.

I'll be the annoying guy calling out the toxic behavior. I don't care if that gives me a bad rep. Eventually more people will stand up with us. I also think it's important to remind those that engage in toxic behavior that their beloved fandoms would get bigger if they didn't act like unwelcoming assholes. This will be a safe space of that crap.

If all fandoms are toxic then it’s our responsibility to call out toxic behavior when we see it. Conforming that “both sides” or “all sides” are toxic is irresponsible.

I don’t buy into the “all sides” theory, some fandoms are definitely more toxic than others, but even if I did buy it, I’m all for us to call out toxic behavior whenever we see it, and that’s something I’m always trying to do. I hope more people do it, eventually.

I’m still hopeful that Era can start to set the example of what fandoms should be.

Here's the issues at play:

You can believe in immigration and its benefits for the economy but not free movement. That is a perfectly reasonable political position and not racist in the slightest. I do think that free movement forces harsh discrimination against non EU immigrants but that's another debate.

The only reason for goods to be blocked at the borders immediately after leaving is a political one and for propoganda. On the day of a hard Brexit, if it ever happens all involved will have perfect regulatory alignment still so no need for additional checks until that changes on either side. We already check for "smugglers," so no worries there. We're already seeing this being suggested with both sides agreeing to maintain the status quo on various issues. Border requirements can be negotiated once regulations begin to diverge to the point they may be needed. Still, bolstering border forces is sensible from this point.

Forecasting economic output in any country is as difficult as forecasting the weather particularly over the long term due to the sheer amount of variables, it's even harder when you have variables that are new and unpredictable and depend on politics that haven't happened yet. Its not unusual for economic figures to be adjusted from one quarter to the next because something unforseen happened. I certainly don't think we'll see the fiscal extremes being forecasted by both sides. There's been numerous cases in history where politicians told a country something "had," to happen or fiscal ruin would occur only for the opposite to happen. The UK joining the Euro for instance or Gordon Brown banging the dispatch box waving a fiscal report shouting "no more boom and bust," just before the biggest bust in a generation.
