We are planning to go to a movie later and I suggested spider-man, we both like him and saw all of the movies, tv shows and played the games. So we like spidey. but he thinks that the animation style looks like it was made for kids since the last movie we saw was incredibles 2, and it was kind of a let down.

I'd start with the standard Hobbit paperback edition. Then after that, read The Annotated Hobbit for more on the lore.

After The Hobbit, tackle The Lord of the Rings. I'd recommend the 50th anniversary edition, either in paperback or hardback form.

If you get a feel for Middle-earth and Tolkien after those two, it's time for work that really does put some people off Tolkien; The Silmarillion. I recommend the illustrated Ted Nasmith edition.

After The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales.

If you want the big three tales in The Silmarillion in separate editions with expanded notes and detail, the standalone versions of The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin are options to consider.

After those works, the 'non-Arda' works by Tolkien compiled together in Tales from the Perilous Realm.

After that, there's the 12 volume History of Middle-earth series by Christopher Tolkien. A scholarly work on the development of The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and the proto-Silmarillion.

There's also The History of the Hobbit, a work similar to the above, but written by John D. Rateliff.

Further scholarly works by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, Tom Shippey, Verlyn Flieger and a plethora of other Tolkien scholars. Over 50 years worth to dip into.

There are essentially no changes to the actual text since Tolkien's final edits. Like I said, Annotated Hobbit has some notes on the margins of the pages, but the original text is identical to other editions. The rest of that post is other works, not The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings. Those two works have remained essentially unchanged for decades and it doesn't matter which edition you get.

If you actually read the many times this was explained, one of the primary characteristics of cyberpunk is that the characters can identify as any genderplural they wish to.
