dunce leaves his car running at a gas station and goes inside to get coffee, gets car stolen. everyone clowns him for leaving his car running cause he wanted to keep the heater running.

I went into my local speedway this morning to get coffee came out and my car was gone. Already filed the report with the police and they did a search and could not find it in the area. Nice Blue 2017 Honda Civic gone that easily. I left the car running but I had the remote keyfob on me and did not think these cars could get far without the Keyfob.... Boy was I wrong.

I think the poster meant to say, "I didn't leave my car running and I took the fob with me" and he will edit it.

That said, proximity keys can be cloned, there's a safety "valve" in some that beeps alarmingly when you go too far from the fob, but the car can't just screech to a halt, for obvious reasons. The car should refuse to start next time the engine is turned off (as opposed to left idling or inert if it has ghas saving shutoff idle).

The BAD news is that Honda and Acura are the number one chop shop victims since there's an excellent network of Honda stolen parts and stripped vehicle components. That Honda might end up as a few bits of car that have serial numbers on them, and even then it could end up as a replacement chassis for a totalled vehicle that ends up back on the street, etc.

Also no matter how "dumb" the OP is, stealing a car is a serious crime and the OP is a victim of car theft, not a victim of stupidity.

Of course you shouldn't leave your car running - but I sometimes do it when I'm defrosting in the morning. I'll start it up, blast all the winter stuff and come back in a few minutes rather than scrape ice or sit in it while it slowly defrosts. I live on a street with no foot traffic and therefore almost zero chance of an opportunist thief. Four blocks away, the incidence of opportunist thieves is 100% tho.

HOWEVER - the number one fight me and Mrs. Stinkles have about car security is her nonstop insistence on leaving bags and shit in her car (or occasionally mine) and I have to repeatedly explain to her, "Who would smash a car window to retrieve two quarters and a penny? An addict would without hesitation. And who would smash a car window to see what was in a duffel bag? Every single car prowler in America."

In some cities, I hate to say it, leaving stuff in your car overnight once and having a window smashed to get it -- is 100% on the thief. And after that, you contributed to your own sadness. And yes, of course the thief is to blame. But that still doesn't mean it's safe to leave stuff in your car.

If the story sounded fishy for so many randos on the Internet, it's most likely that police detectives would pick that up right from the start and keep the possibility of a scam as a working theory. I wouldn't know when exactly they started getting more evidence of it but probably very early (the anonymous leaks started in earnest). They played their cards close to the chest because for obvious reasons the case had to be airtight once they made it public. It's a bit sad that they were so thorough because of how high profile it all is and that so many manhours had to be allocated to that sick pathetic stunt (though you can only blame the hoaxer for the latter).
