I used to work with a 40 something Nigerian fella a couple of years ago.

I was new to the job, so I was working with him so he can show me the ropes.

The first time I was working with him, I shifted the conversation towards a bit of small talk. I was gonna stay there for a year, so might as well get to know the guy a bit, y’know?

Anyways, since he was the first Nigerian person I’ve ever met, I thought I’d ask him about the political and social situation in his country. So we ended having a really good insightful conversation about the history of his country and the African continent in general, and how colonization and corruption really did/does a number on them.

I was thinking “wow, I haven’t had such an interesting conversation like that in so long.” And I was looking forward  to having more with him.

Well suddenly he went all and started talking about the liberal agenda that Obama had spread in the continent. Particularly the gay liberal agenda. Then he went on a tangent about how horrible homosexuality is, and how it’s a crime against nature. He said that in Nigeria they believe so strongly in that, that if they saw a goat mounting another they would chop both their heads off.

So yeah…let’s just say I only talked shop with the guy after that.

The other Nigerian in the unit (and the previous guy’s office neighbor) has a live stream of Fox News playing on his phone literally all day while working, and told me to my face how much he hates liberals and Obama.

Other than THAT, real nice helpful fellows. Just hope they don’t stumble upon a brother dressed like this 

The moral of this story is that NOT ALL SKINFOLK ARE KINFOLK.

Edit: It is actually a more reasonable opinion than I thought. It was just too long a post to glance through. It seems to be more of an attack on outrage culture than anything else.

I don't disagree with the sentiment and the story could still change. We're mostly reliant on media for the factual bits and well... But I think this particular post does fall for the same type of error you see often in conspiracy theory thinking, even if to make a point : every facet of the story can be cherry picked and given separate alternative explanations to. It's superficially rational but in reality once you look at the whole story it doesn't make a lick of sense.

I took exception with the statistics about Nigerian homophobia, even though it's presented here purely for the sake of an intellectual demonstration because :
- The two Nigerian brothers in the story said they were born in Chicago and lived in the US quite a bit (though the football record for one says he also went to school in Nigeria) so it's already maybe a bit of a stretch to use polls conducted in Africa to them.
- It seems to follow a pattern often seen on ResetEra where reality is expected to conform to statistics (fake claims of victimhood are statistically insignificant = It's not even allowed to entertain the possibility).
- The exact same argument was made earlier in that thread with a straight face.

I don't doubt Nigerians are widely homophobic (though it's already a leap to go from "homophobic" to "willing to plan physical aggression for homophobic motives"), but I'm not gonna assume those two specific people of Nigerian descent / nationality must therefore be. Especially since they contest it, that they were interviewed by police and that the evidence so far seems to suggest they were accomplices, not instigators and don't need that sort of motive.

I'm sure there's a poll out there about how overwhelmingly Italians care about pasta, it doesn't make it logical to assume Lucky Luciano crimes were motivated by hatred for people who overcooked pennes.

Yeah. It is a point others have made in that thread, or other Smollett threads as well. That particular argument is what I latched on to. The point of me walking it back a bit was because, the overall point he is making is about the way we jump to conclusions the moment something confirms our preconceived opinions and biases. It is the overall general point that I guess I agree with even if the specifics of his argument are unrealistic at this point.

There is plenty of comedy that is not at the expense of LGBTQ people. It is possible to be funny without resorting to transphobia and the like, it has nothing to do with "political correctness" and everything to do with just not being hateful.
