Being fair,  the academy has also played the political game with the Oscars in the past.

Basically.

The Oscars have rarely been a merit based awards show, like ever.

If it's not signaling toward outside politics, it's inside politic's affecting choices and outcomes.

And with the way all these factions speak about the awards it seems like pretty much everyone grasps this and it's just a bunch of annoying indirect arguing and jostling over what they want the Oscars to be persuaded and influenced by besides just merit.

It’s a few thousand disparate people voting.

Why do people talk about “The Academy” like it’s an entity with a singular will?   It’s not political it’s not merit based it’s not any one thing.  It’s people voting.

Swear to god people need to stop talking about awards shows.

I've not seen the film, so I don't know if it is a worthy winner or not, but a lot of the criticism I am seeing is purely political. If it's not a worthy winner then explain what makes it a bad film. I mean, what does the fact that the production team is predominantly white have to do with the quality of the movie for instance?

It seems like some people want the Oscars to be judged by how 'woke' a movie is rather than how good a movie is.

There has been people cynical about the Oscars for years. Everyone knows there is a certain type of movie that is Oscar material. Not necessarily something political, it can be someone playing a person with a disability for instance. Play a famous person and portray them well, and you have a chance of winning an Oscar.

The thing is, I don't see how judging every movie by how woke it is would make people less cynical about the Oscars in the long run. It would be the most woke movie won it each year. Yeah, there is a type of movie that tends to do well, but it is not like anyone is pressured into judging a movie around tight parameters. I don't see how that improves things rather than makes things worse.

So I suppose violence and hate speech is okay. I dunno if saying that is promoting and glorifying this stuff  is the way to go. They could just be honest and say that the YT shitstorm is scaring them.

Sometimes I think that these big social media companies start out very naïve, thinking that their communities would police themselves and they didn't need to put basic "be good don't do evil" into the TOS.

Many of the squids featured in Splatoon are actually ~14 in human years. However, squids reach their sexual maturity at age 4, so the Splatoon squids are certainly above the squid age of consent.
