It's not so much horseshoe as reverting back to usual, really. It wasn't exactly uncommon in fan circles 10-15 years ago to consider the gaming press as a giant joke (and that was true in the US or in France, relative to their local outlets). It's not really a surprise Gamergate latched onto what was a very widely shared sentiment of the gaming press being bought for. Who exactly are the buyer's is vague enough you can tweak it for your particular taste : console wars or kulturkampf.

I think most reasonable people, because of Gamergate, took a step back and realized that just perpetuating what had become a nuanceless, lazy & reactionary caricature wasn't the best thing, that gamers had some responsibility in it and that we should strive for articulate, pointed criticism instead of generalisations even if the sentiment had some root in reality (Sterling had that exact video a few years back).

I guess it was too Centroboogist for ERA and that their notch only have two positions : 0 and 10. The same thing happened with the normal press in 2016 with people rushing to subscribe and support the free press essential to any democracy, only to regret it when they discovered that some of the coverage or op-eds weren't to their taste.
