SNK Making New Hardware - NeoGeo Mini Coming?

SNK will debut new hardware that features a collection of popular Neo Geo titles as part of its 40th anniversary celebration, the company announced.

“This year, SNK celebrates its 40th anniversary,” the company said in a tweet. “It is with gratitude towards the fans who have supported SNK’s titles, including The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and Metal Slug, that we introduce a new game machine that compiles the popular titles of Neo Geo! Please look forward to it. The Future is Now!”

Further information was not announced.

Hope this turns out better than the NeoGeo X did.

Pretty good list overall!  Some of the absolute best are on there and I'm glad to see some of the lesser-known but still among the best titles like Sengoku 3 and Kizuna Encounter.

If this is all true:

Would have been better if they had Art Of Fighting 2 over 1, Real Bout 2 or Special over RBFF, Neo Turf Masters over Top Players Golf (seriously...who made this decision?), and Baseball Stars 2 (da GOAT) or Super Baseball 2020 on there, among others.  I'm sure this will be inevitably-hacked anyway and turned into another one of the endless lines of HEY CHECK OUT THIS RETRO THING I GOT THAT PLAYS THE SAME GAMES ALL THOSE OTHER RETRO THINGS AND MY MODDED CONSOLES AND MY PHONE AND MY PC AND MY MICROWAVE CAN RUN I CAN'T WAIT TO BUY IT!!!!

Looks like a $50 stocking stuffer to me, but what do I know. Those mini-controls  and yeah I know you can hook up an external controller but then it loses the portable factor.

Might as well just do a MAME setup with a HRAP if you don’t want to buy an actual Neo Geo cab. Don’t really see the point, but as a past Neo Geo cab owner I’m biased I guess.

$200 is way too much.  I can see it being $100 or so.  Speculation is that they are going with the tiny screen to keep costs down.

Eh, "portable" really needs to be in quotes, because it's not exactly the kind of thing you're going to be bringing around with you everywhere.  Doesn't appear to use batteries either.

The point is to cash in on the mini-console craze (for the second time) and hopefully do it much better than the Neo-Geo X did.  If it's good, this will be an easy way for people to play some NeoGeo games on an HDTV or monitor.  A hell of a lot easier to set up and less costly than a PC with MAME and an arcade stick.

I think it's kinda neat that they're going for the mini arcade cab look but also letting you use other controllers and hook it up to a TV or monitor, although personally I would have preferred a tiny AES console like the NES/SNES Minis.

If you have a Switch, you can also already get a lot of these games and then just buy one of those little wooden arcade display stands for pretty much the same effect.

Exactly. I get they want this to be "portable" but shit, the bartop arcade units you can make with a Raspberry Pi are "portable" and bigger (though still cramped IMO).

It never got localized.  It's the kind of game that would make for an easy HD port-up to PSN.

Pain in the ass to hack, plus more importantly the controls are supposed to be shit- especially the pads. That's why I never bothered with it.

My hope is that they will just release a NeoGeo mini console that is better- kind of like whatever they have running on their joystick that has games built in.  Get M2 on that, SNK.

the arcade stick seems like the cooler deal imo. its an emulator with built in hardware plus it works as a controller for ps4/switch and you can plug in another controller to it for two player. it's also hackable to add more games.

I don't know why they can't get these things right. This was attempt number two, but at least the joystick is supposed to be much better. I'm just not going to spring for it with that price.

While I'd totally support them if they finally just release a little copycat emu box mini console-thing, it's not like I don't have 200 other ways to play NeoGeo games as it is.

The pads aren't that great, but the little joystick on the unit itself is actually pretty nice.  Mine is still at work so I haven't played it for a while, but I was getting pretty good at Garou in it.
