if they're louder than us too then there's no way we're much above the global average

How many Americans do you see in Sweden or Ireland or wherever? It is true that Euros will argue with each other in English though so maybe that is giving you some bias?

Saw it happen in Venice when a conversation went from bounjour/ciao to "Go back to your country!" over a lady wanting to use a restaurants bathroom. It's cute because you can cross borders during a lunch break.

I have no idea how Americans behave overseas. The ugly American abroad stereotype exists but honestly I always assumed that Americans visiting abroad were less likely to be loud and obnoxious than the average American who never leaves the country.

Can confirm, I remember when I went to a rock festival around here. You yanks were rude as hell, while us Koreans were busy looking at the ground and just kind of mumbling barely hearable protests while festering in impotent rage.

This reminds me.  The first and only time I ever experienced people clapping when a plane lands was a flight from Moscow to remote Siberia.  A bunch of Russians started clapping after the plane landed.

One time a Canadian fellow told me he thought I was Canadian because I wasn’t acting like an American at all. He said he would be proud to have me in his country because I exude that Canadian vibe.

I’ve never felt so insulted yet flatted in all my life.

I don't see an insult there.  However, telling Americans they could pass as Canadians is kind of like passing out gold stars in class.  We still expect you to go through the proper immigration channels just like everyone else.    But as long as you understand that, you should take pride - you're one of the good ones.

There are people who live abroad, and people who are just tourists. When outside of one's own culture, the foreign residents /tend/ to be more interested in fitting in, making accommodations, and generally not assuming that their own culture is "correct" and the one they're experiencing is "weird" or "wrong."

Tourists are usually more interested in briefly experiencing something other than daily life, but as an amusement.

The rudest tourists I encountered in the USA were French. In Japan, the Chinese have been stunningly oblivious to even the most basic consideration of others.

The loudest talker on my team is a French Canadian who is bad at apologizing. It's possible he's not Canadian…?

Americans tendency to be a little more brash than the english, and westerners from the colonies is a massive plus for me. I also like it in Australians. It makes the assholes extra obnoxious, but y'know, at least you know they're assholes. 'Muricans know how to have fun.

My first "encounter" with Americans i remember (i was ~8 or so) outside of my v librul californian cousins was a loud Burger King chain operator and his family at a resort in the middle of a protected reserve, accessible (normally) only by tramping or boat. This guy was bragging, loudly, about how he instead just drove his huge truck up the riverbed :lol Their family was weird af, but we had a p good time hanging out with them. The father grabbed my feet at one point and showed his presumably pampered son what a real boys feet looked like (im a bumpkin).
