Another PlayerUnknown skirt chaser goes F2P.
« on: April 22, 2018, 05:10:39 PM »
Remember that cringe-y announcer at the MS E3 conference last year? :doge Just in case you forgot:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/544920/Darwin_Project/

Well, the developers are now no longer charging $15 for it. I guess it's MS attempt to kick Cliffy while he's down and try to get people on the game when Twitch streamers prefer their friends in a match over the randoms that join them. :doge :doge :doge :doge

(Play PUBG or Fortnite over Radical Shites and this, plz)

At E3 this year everything will be Battle Royale.

I'm just waiting for MS to announce the Perfect Dark reboot and poop in our faces by making it Battle Royale.
And there's obviously going to be Sonic Battle Royale and Tom Clancy's Royale Battle as well as Need for Speed: BATTLEZROYALZE

The race is on between Tomb Raider Battle Royale, Final Fantasy Battle Royale and Resident Evil Battle Royale.

Also the first creatively bankrupt megapublisher who combines toys to life with battle royale is hopefully drone-bombed before the year is up.

They will repurpose Sea of Thieves for Battle Royale

Thinking MS will fund a whole game again  :lol

I think I saw this joke on Twitter a week ago, so I guess you're just as unoriginal :-P

It's funny how R6:Siege is trucking along accumulating players and not a Battle Royale, but almost no one is talking about it. I guess because of its slow sustained growth instead of BOOM overnight success.

I'm kind of lukewarm on the genre, but I think a Crackdown 3 BR mode could be interesting. Maxed out agent skills, hopping around the city punching and kicking people through buildings (provided the "cloud destruction" even exists now).

It's funny how R6:Siege is trucking along accumulating players and not a Battle Royale, but almost no one is talking about it. I guess because of its slow sustained growth instead of BOOM overnight success.

Rainbow 6 is still niche. AFAIK it's doing CS:GO numbers (which is in the same sort of niche for shooters)? PUBG still has 500,000+ playing it despite it slowly bleeding players to Fortnite.

Siege isn't anywhere as high as CS:GO which finally subsumed nearly all the CS fanbase into itself (though I believe ubi strongly suggested it sold more or as many copies of the game in its second year than its first) and pubg maxes out at almost 2 million a day according to Steam still

I think Ubisoft is pushing Siege hard for esports this year though?

Ubisoft also held the Six Invitational tournaments in 2017 and 2018, in which top teams competed for the top prize. The 2018 tournament attracted 321,000 viewers on Twitch
i have no idea what this means :doge

321,000 viewers is pretty respectable. AFAIK CS:GO did 1million or so in like 2015.

But viewer numbers aren't players, and you're forgetting that some copies of Siege may have been bought on Origin and Uplay (lol tho) which doesn't count the entire player numbers.

We can change this topic to a Rainbow 6 thread I guess. (I don't even own it though)

AFAIK it's slow-burn is because Ubisoft scrambled to fix things. It has word-of-mouth as an effect of increasing the player base but not as fast as something like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds did.

CS:GO averages between 400k-500k concurrent players during its daily peak, Siege only pulls about 100k [could be a bit higher than that with uPlay-only peeps]. PUBG still gets over 2 million.

Those are 3 of the 4 most popular games on Steam right now, the other is DOTA 2.

if we could find uplay numbers, we'd know Siege, because even if you're on the Steam version you still login through uplay

i wonder if ingame it says people online anywhere, i suppose i could spend 30 seconds to find out

edit: nah, doesn't say anywhere

i think best case scenario you double the steam number, it still falls short by halfway to CS:GO, which is fucking great for a MP shooter, just look at CoD's numbers considering it's been the largest franchise in the world

but like i said above CS:GO has basically reached a point where it finally gained acceptance at a level where CS 1.6 and CS:S diehards let those games finally fall off the steam stats charts, and GO went noticeably up...and CS has always been its own kinda thing that you just ignore like DOTA

i mean...24 hour highs
CS:GO -  429,324
CS1.6 - 19,033
L4D2 - 9,236
CS:S - 6,957
Clicker Heroes - 6,833

i would have never believed that a couple years ago, especially considering how hard people were sticking to 1.6 and even Condition Zero, and this was after GO had been out for a while

completely without any basis: i think a small amount of people did move over to TTT, because Garry's Mod had a bump a few years ago and hasn't dropped back off like it used to, and it seemed like every youtuber was doing that for a whole year

Counter Strike still being this popular  :-X

Thought I had the other day was its the perfect time for Team Fortress 3. If Valve chipped in Dota 2 tourney money into a TF3 league, itd take some of Overwatch's lunch for sure.

I've never understood the Overwatch comparisons really, I mean sure, there's some similarities, but just the fact that TF2 allows class multiplication and is "best" with 12 per team makes it a very different experience to me.

Overwatch to me is more like a scaled down set of small decisive encounters that often determine a game. TF2 has always, provided your stupid fucking team isn't playing Sniper and Spy only I MEAN OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU ALL DOING, felt more like a slog of war at its best. And one where a team has constructed itself around a chokepoint in a unique manner that is a puzzle that needs to be cracked. Blasting through with an Uber requires your team to back you up or the gap will fill back in. Overwatch has those aspects but by being a small team it's much easier for two or three guys to dominate a match and start a steamroll. (Not that we all haven't done this in TF2, especially when benji is on medic. :smug) TF2's later added on modes are more comparable than the ones that came over from TFC and are the superior modes and maps. :snob

When it comes to gameplay, match pacing, and maps, its a night and day difference.

Overwatch's cast of characters has sooooooo many ideas ripped from TF2 tho, its absurd. Sniper's jarate? Took that, gave it to Ana. Charged sniping, Widowmaker. Demoman's charge thing, Doomfist.

What makes that gross to me is how how phoned in Overwatch is as a game compared to TF2. We will never see Overwatch transform like TF2 did overtime. Blizzard would rather have Overwatch league, chase esports dollars.

Valve knows how to keep a game alive with new content and keep competitive stuff going. Blizzard is pretty clueless with that.

Hell, let's take that even earlier:

>TF2
>Post-class kit update

Blizzard sucks (new maps when?), but :gurl @ believing Valve is better.

Making it free to play, adding in different weapons and kits, hats, it all made TF2 expand and grow community wise. The game had a really good life and most players look back at TF2 fondly. How TF2 was handled was perfect commercialy and keeping most of its players happy.

Blizzard releases a new character every 4 months, and thus far, only 1 has greatly affected the meta (moira). Sprays and voice clips make up the majority of content you unlock, they sell garbage OWL skins but you cant buy the non ass skins. Blizzard is terrified by the prospect of adding in new weapons for characters I imagine.

Valve does its content smarter and better. I have over 30 days of hours in Overwatch despite how everything besides gameplay is shitty. Blizzard prioritized OWL more than anything and it shows.

You'd have to make a very personal and strong argument that Valve didnt do it better.

IMO they fucked up TF2 by making class kit updates. If they pumped out maps (something Blizzard isn't doing), TF2 would've been fine.

Also IMO that F2P switch ruined the community. But that's opening a can of worms.

If you're going to say Valve supports their games good with TF2, you can't go "CS:GO is still popular?" despite Valve putting money into the eSports scene there.

Honestly, both of them have shit support. I don't honestly think most game developers have done decent support since the age of Expansion packs, though.

name a Valve expansion pack that added to the original game rather than being a closeted standalone :teehee
