Went to a modest public viewing yesterday. As a filthy casual with no stake in the happenings, watching the group dynamics and idiocy all around me was refreshing. That, and the spit-roast suckling pig was excellent. I could get used to this.

As a German, seeing our boys stumble around like that was ... interesting, nonetheless. Watching Mexico gleefully dismantle them certainly provided lots of entertainment, though.

That, and the Brazil superfan that just wouldn't shut up about how his team would get serious and snatch a goal ANY SECOND NOW until like three minutes after the game. Glad to see humans are still humans, no matter whether it's about sperging on the vidya or masturbating to 22 peeps running after a ball.  :lol

Interesting Worldcup. Argentinia, Brazil and Germany all did way worse than I would have thought. I mean, I have no clue either way, but still.

eh, it's been a while since brazil has had a first eleven that i've watched and thought, here's a team that can get a goal at will and just outscore the opponent even if they do concede

I was going to support Germany, but watching Mexico beat them was really exciting. I need a team I wouldn't be happy to see losing in an upset. So I'm going to support Switzerland. They played well against Brazil, but they have a challenge ahead of them. If Brazil and Switzerland both have the same points at the end of the group stage, who gets the 1 spot in the bracket?

...if a certain trainer is allowed to eat his boogers again, we're going to ace it, Dandy. We were clearly holding back on purpose.
:smug Germany is about to do a new game+ with ironman rules. Watch and be amazed.

(I may not be all that invested in soccer, but I don't feel like the Germans worked well off each other, or as a team, really. At least until 20 minutes before the end or so. Nor did they really adapt to changes all that well. Dunno if you can have lofty asperations with that ragtag bunch of otherwise pretty good individuals. Not sure if the team can be beaten into shape by the time it needs to perform. Sweden will be an interesting match for sure.)

Terrible starts for the big teams. At this point i think Belgium has the best chance of winning this thing but first games usually don't mean much. I do hope Sweden can beat Germany and knock them out of the tournament, god that'd be juicy.

And jesus fuck Brazil. When are these guys going to realize corners are their achilles heel? Every world cup it fucks them.  Saying that, it was a push, i'm not sure why that wasn't reviewed, or why Gabriel Jesus's play wasn't reviewed, guy was torn down in the box.

You guys saying they flop.... they get pulled and grabbed every fucking play. Watch the replays. This isn't rugby, you can't pull and tug guys to the ground.

Possibly, but if they come together who knows? this tournament doesn't seem to have any 'great' teams and it does seem lacking...

i think the fact that the U.S isn't in it, and Italy as well, takes a lot of out of the event.

It's England breh, they've already missed 5 chances in front of the net.

And Tunisia makes it 1-1 on a stupid ass England penalty in the box.

Love it.

So after 5 days some thoughts:

 - Portugal had a beautiful game. And by portugal, I mean Ronaldo. He was great. But history shows that's not enough to get through to win the cup
-  This isn't the same Germany from last World Cup
- Mexico put on a very, very strong showing. They played aggressive and well as a team.  Something I haven't seem too much from others. If we were to go on just the games played so far, I'd say Mexico has the best chance
- Messi is a mess
- Belgium played an arrogant game, but it was sorta scary how easy they made it look in the second half
- England. WTF? You let Tunisia tie you then park the bus on you until the 91st minute? That's ridiculous

If Belgium starts living up to their potential nobody in this tournament will stop them. Mexico finally has a chance to go beyond the quarter-finals.

As long as Germany is knocked out i'll be happy.

England ain't going nowhere in this world cup.

You can say that about the last 50 years.

50 years is a bit harsh but at this point "choking" is too generous a term and the basic fact of the matter is that England is a historically mediocre European middleweight. Especially so considering the financial means and player base they have. I'd say Croatia has a bigger chance of winning this World Cup and has certainly been a more exciting team in the last twenty years.

I mentioned it long ago in the football thread but as far as I've read England was a bit of a coaching wasteland at every level of the ladder starting in amateur and lower leagues still a couple of years ago. The Czech Republic Federation had as many properly educated & certified coaching staff than in the whole of the FA, for 9 times less the number of registered members. And despite the truckload of foreign expertise pouring in, top English coaches were still until recently caricaturally insular and myopic down to the point that Steve McClaren was the most worldly one for having won an Eredivisie championship.  :heh So imagine how the old geezers in lower leagues must still be like.
It probably plays a part in why England teams always seem to have terrible cohesiveness and no solid game plan. They squandered some genuinely good rosters because of it.

Holy fuck i got a glimpse of these 'women' broadcasters Fox Sports and some channels in England have injected into the commentary... my god that's cringe. Fox sports has i don't know who but her whiny overexcited voice is the worst fucking thing the network could have done.

Why does a woman have to now be injected into everything? This is atrocious. Thank god latin America hasn't followed this ridiculous quota policy. At least not yet.
