Also there's already a neutral zone, offside rule is only in effect past the central line.

Well yeah, that's an argument for why pushing it out for say 10 yards in each direction wouldn't automatically destroy the game.

But why ? I don't recall offsides at midfield being a problem for the game in general ?

Just spitballing, since Dandy brought it up, on whether the game could be tilted to create a bit more action without devolving into cherry-picking.

Obviously the world's most popular sport doesn't need to change anything, but speculating always brings out the fun police.

Offside rule is as old as the first "standardized" codified rules of the game in the second part of the XIXth century.

VAR drama is fucking amazing btw

omg

especially the gesture of a square the ref makes and then makes a decision :hyper
And here people were saying VAR would hurt the drama

You're not completely wrong. Offsides has been annoying but because of the human factor of making that call which is pretty hard to make accurately.

Now with the VAR this shouldn't be much of a problem. However, in saying that i'd still like to see 1 tiny change. As we saw in that Iran game, that guy was barely offsides, i feel like it should be a clear separation between him and the last defender. Like, daylight separation where you can see space between the two bodies. A lot of times they'll call offsides by a fucking hair.

"For these girls, it will be possible to get the best football genes, and will lay down the success of the Russian national team on several generations ahead," the post read, as translated by Lauren Theisen of Deadspin. "Forward! We believe in you!"

This is true. The women are beautiful but the dudes are mostly like Maradona (A gold watch on each wrist)

I like Messi though, i feel for him. He has to be thinking to himself what could have been if he chose to play for Spain.

I think this may settle the debate on Ronaldo vs Messi.

Without a supportive squad he literally grew up playing with Messi can be boxed out to nothing. Ronaldo, still does Ronaldo stuff even if he has nobody supporting him.

Eh, Ronaldo took his team to the Eurocup and won it. Not to mention the World Cup semifinals run in 2006 with a team far inferior than Messi ever had at Argentina.

Football just doesn't work this way.
How doesn't it work this way? Besides maybe Basketball there is no other sport out there that player talent matters so much.

:derp
There were world-class players that never won anything or didn't even qualify for any major international tournaments because their teams sucked.
Andriy Shevchenko and George Weah were some of the best strikers of their respective times and never did anything on the international stage.

Messi didn't lose this game, Croatia had total control over the midfield area.  Rakitic and Modric were dominant, nothing Messi or Ronaldo or anyone are able to overcome.

edit: People are giving Lewandowski shit for not showing up in big international competitions but look who he's playing with. Milik was really good but then had two major knee injuries and Zielinski is really talented. The rest of the Polish team are has-beens or never-will-bes.

But he's also not leading his team at all. He's fucking broken, and i get it, the coach is a joke, the team is in shambles, but he just crawled into a hole.....

Ronaldo is up there pumping his guys up. That's leadership. You have to weigh a persons overall greatness on every aspect of the game and for me right now Ronaldo has that edge.

The guys you mentioned were great players, Hell, i think Ronaldinho is the best skilled player ever, but he simply stopped giving a fuck and so he can't be included in that discussion of GOAT.

I'd say talent is rather diluted in football, with 11 players all coordinating, plus it's a sport and often a competition format with slim margins between a win or a defeat. I don't doubt Maradona or Pelé were as good as the hype but it's probably not inconsequential they happened to play for historically strong nations either.

The GOAT discussion is silly anyway.
There were so many defensive players that are somehow never mentioned. Cafu and Javier Zanetti "invented" the modern full back, Paolo Maldini was an all-time great and yet, they never get any recognition because people look at goals scored and not individual skill.

Without players like Modric,Ramos and Kroos, Real Madrid would lose at the first knockout stage of the Champions League every year. Same for Messi without Xavi(now Rakitic), Iniesta and Busquets The whole "discussion" is completely pointless.

I don't think it's entirely pointless, it's hard to deny that some players dictate play more than others (the mythical 10 then, now extended to 8 and 9,5) or shine in clutch but yes of course they're only so good as the band backing them and also very much yes that some positions get overlooked too frequently (goalkeeping may arguably be a position where individual talent may affect a result in its own).

Portugal won a major title and seem to be in a good dynamic now but CRonaldo long couldn't drag the team to himself at the top too until recently, despite Portugal not being the weakest of selections (though certainly to be fair not as drowning in talent as the AFA), while Argentina got into finals at the world and continental level.

They're both total freaks and certainly the most dominant players since the original Ronaldo. It's a bit of a blessing to have two at the same time.

A team filled to the brim with talent, and not to mention the leading goal scorer in world cup history :foodcourt

But you're right, they worked like a team and won. No one is debating that a well organized team can't overcome one or two superstars.

But that can be said for any sport. Defense is usually less about skill and more about tactical knowhow, and cohesion. That's why those guys are left out of the GOAT discussions in all sports. The only times they are included is when they are also insane goal scorers with insane offensive skills, as like a Bobby Orr.

Tackles and Headers are definitely skills. If you want to be so reductive and only include on-ball skills then Denilson is probably one of the best players I've ever seen, but as a player he sucked.
Football is too complex of a game and not comparable to Basketball or Hockey at all. Defenders are not even involved in the attack 99% of the time while all players in Hockey or Basketball take some shots by default.

They're both total freaks and certainly the most dominant players since the original Ronaldo. It's a bit of a blessing to have two at the same time.

I both agree and would like to mention that Zidane is on that level, although R9 is my personal fav. And the fact that R9's career was plagued with injuries and by the time he was 30, dude got fat. I doubt we'll ever see a striker as good as R9 in his prime anytime soon. Although Cristiano seemingly is a much better striker lately than he was before (I know he was more of a winger most of his career).

That said, my soccer shitposting ammunition just got a few good ones:

"You know who didn't miss his penalty in the first game? Modric :smug"

"You know who made it out of group stages even when he was flabby and sick? OG Ronaldo :smug"
Right on Brows. I still think the original Ronaldo is the best pure striker there ever was.

Messi and R7 are different because they're part of this new age of superstar athlete where they don't party and blow cocaine and drink all night long like most other guys in their primes from back in the day.......

so much so that the original Ronaldo conceived a kid during the 2002 world cup with a random Japanese/Brazilian woman! And people want to criticize Burger King  :lol.
