  The ref hadn't just recovered from a foot injury. Again, it's besides the point, it was intentional. He should have at least received a yellow for it.

Theatrics were part of the game, a big part, because refs used to be shit and you had to oversell somethign in order to get calls. The better player you are, the more you'd get fouled, and you had to exaggerate to make sure you didn't get brutalized out there.

Now with VAR, and referees being better in general, the theatrics stand out more as pussy ass baby shit that needs to stop. I'm in total agreement with that.

The players are already protected. No tackles from behind, no tackles where the ball isn't won. Goalkeepers have priority in 50/50s over strikers. Studs up in a tackle = instant red card.
