Yeah I'm not surprised it might have been the case. I never heard of it till now and never cared to find out, really, because that's a bit extraneous to the whole pushing a ball part.

That was an odd final today by the way, it didn't have the feel of a final to me. But maybe the final starting in the middle of the afternoon was the reason for that.

France scored 4 goals without creating that many chances and got some calls from the ref.

All I'm saying: Croatia was robbed :goty2

I swear some people don't know shit about Soccer.

Croatia path to the final was way easier than France, they were lucky to be where they were in the first place. France put them back in check with a reality slap.

France won 4/2, not 2/1 or 1/0.

France's first goal resulted from a bogus FK. Croatia should have pushed up higher to avoid exactly what happened though.
Then the ref on the field saw the handball in real time and didn't think it was a pen. VAR is supposed to correct grave mistakes not 50/50 calls where the ball changed direction literally inches away from the player that left him no time to react.
Croatia was the better team the first half and started the second half on fire but caught a stupid goal where the deflection falls right in front of Pogba's foot again and Subasic doesn't see the ball properly. Tough luck.
Mbappe's goal was a shot that Subasic has to make a better effort on. He was caught out of position and should have gotten there.

France's defense played great, but they didn't manage to create much and had their lucky stars to thank to score 4 goals in this kind of game.

Since you were spooking bullshit (and still is), I assumed you were from the USA, hence why I said soccer instead of Football.

Yeah lucky star. They were lucky to score on a freekick. They were lucky to score on a 100% justified penalty (did you play Football once in your lifetime ?). They were lucky when Pogba did a worldclass hail mary to M'bappe and then managed to score 30 sec later. They were lucky when M'bappe did score the fourth banger. Only luck right, same about defeating Urugway, Argentina and a Belgium on fire this year.

They're just lucky to have many players in their team that play in the best club around. Varane (RM), Pogba (MU), Matuidi (JUV), Kante (CHE), Umtiti (BAR), Mbappe best player in the PSG... Again, luck.

The salt is strong, but keep your cool, you're full of shit. I'm Spanish and I admit easily France did GREAT during this world cup, nothing to do with luck. Only thing they lacked was a proper striker. Giroud is shit and has always been, he's even worse than he was in Arsenal last season. With a proper french striker, Croatia would have eat even more concrete.

Croatia is only team lucky enough to be there in the first place, their path to the final was way easier than France and outside of Perisic and Modric deadly precision, they're nothing to write home about. People just love to root for the underdog instead of the better team, as always.

You were speaking about luck, weren't you ? Croatia had it easier than France during this world cup, that's luck. France players revenue might equal Croatia GDP, nothing do with luck if they destroy them 4 to 2, it only makes sens. Croatia was lucky France GK did a stupid mistake, because the spank would have been even harder at 4/1. Croatia was also lucky Giroud is what he is. Luck was on Croatia side and still lost the match.

France won the WC in 98, France was in final in 2006 WC, France was in quarter-finals in 2014 WC, France was in final in the 2016 Euro and France won the world cup today. When was the last time Croatia did something decent prior to this year ? France has always been a great nation of Football with amazing players, their record speak for them.

About Giroud, learn to read : I was speaking about last season. Last season he was still playing for Arsenal, he only changed for Chelsea mid-season (and was awful in both).

France benefited from a dumb own-goal and a weak penalty you could barely even see on replay, and you want to say Croatia got lucky?

France got dominated for most of this game.

Not really, possession football has not exactly worked out great for WC teams this year (Looking at you Spain, Germany and Argentina).  France had less shots but more on target and this was the stat that really mattered.

Also Croatia benefited from a goalkeeping error to get their second.

No doubts About France deserving to win the Cup. Probably the individually best Team, tactically disciplined & mentally alyways 'there'. And they had a tough path to the funal.

That being said, it can't be denied that almost everything in the final went their way. They would have won that game without the luck, but save for the 15 minutes to the beginning of the second half, they didn't even have to try.

I know you confined it to WC Teams but the ball possession stats of the winners in the european leagues read like this

England: 71,6%
Germany: 63,8%
France: 63,4%
Spain: 63,2%
Italy: 56,6%

I won't deny that teams like spain or germany need some new ideas for their possession based football, both were uncreative and predictable for their opponents. But well executed ball possession football is far from over.

I am a Man City fan so I am well versed on ball possession and how to dominate with it and quality passing. Though I think the stats might be off a bit, pretty sure City was in the 65% range for possession but a whopping 89% passing accuracy. Ball possession is not going away, it just did not have really good results in this WC.  Watching Spain reminded me of that soccer bit from the Simpsons.

this is part of the argument though

slowed down it looks like he could have went for the ball with his hand, but in full speed there's no fucking way he did it on purpose, especially since he had no idea the guy in front of him was going to miss it with his head.

IIRC correctly the rules of the games never mention the "intent" or "purpose" because a referee can only judge what he sees. There's also illustrated examples of what to look for and how to assess a litigious hand. The hand is clearly going to the ball here and I believe it's in the guidelines.

Evennnnnnn if that were the case he should have let it go to make up for that first bullshit call. The VAR room should have fucking said "listen, this is a toss up call, but the other one greizman dived" and he should have left the call like he originally made it on the field.

It's dumb.

Really not sure about this. Croatia really looked better, outside of some individual sequences. IMO if you could somehow run this as a best of 7 series, Croatia would take it 4-2.

This can absolutely happen in low-scoring sports. As a hockey fan, I'm sure you've seen plenty of games where one team is dominant and outshoots their opponent like 2:1, but still loses.

For sure, but that definitely wasn't the case with this game lol. I'd honestly flip it - France dominated and Croatia had just a few good moments. France clearly wasn't playing their hardest, either.

There's almost no reality where that Croatian team beats that French team.

when you go up 1-0 immediately on a bullshit call, and then go up again 2-1 on another bullshit call yeah things start to look pretty fucking effortless.

but i'm not even arguing if france would have won regardless, or even if they're the most skilled team, they are, we all know that, but the game was ruined by the ref early on and that fucking sucks. any chance croatia may have had of pulling off an upset was quickly squashed.
