Was there a more overrated scientist of the past century?

He gets to be buried between Darwin and Newton, while greats like Sandage, Sanger and James Watson are unknowns to the general person.

A few years ago I interviewed at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the interviewees told me they frequently see Watson around, he'll sit and talk with them and is pretty open (though apparently he's starting to go a tad senile in his old age)

Hawking was one of the greats, easily up there with Bill Nye the Science Guy and Mr. Wizard.

You know the greats, because they were on The Big Bang Theory.

(I have way too little knowledge in natural sciences to judge the guy's work, but his gigantic presence in popular media couldn't possibly have been the same).

I dunno about his popular opinion, but he has a theory on blackholes (Hawking Energy), like Einstein and Newton. So... :yeshrug

Barely relatable, but it always cracks me up how Neil deGrasse Tyson can't imagine a Sci-Fi movie not being factual. Can't wait till he starts reviewing videogames like sorry gamers, but Final Fantasy has no regard for scientific fact.

Speaking of Tyson, he doesn't have a theory. So if Hawing was able-bodied, he'd still be better than Tyson. :doge

Citing James Watson and not Rosalind Franklin as an unrecognized scientist.

I don't wish to engage with the ableist hypothesis proffered in the OP, but for sure the guy didn't work in the one true science of Marxism-Leninism.

If he was able-bodied he would have been jerking off into women’s hair at the movie theatre.

What if Stephen Hawking was an advanced being at the ninth level of initiation, sent to spy on mankind by the Lord Sanat Kumara, and report back all necessary information to the headquarters located in Shamballah?

Something I ponder all the time. Stephen Hawking is someone you would least suspect.
