albini's post punk industrial drum machine scuzz improves both of these IMO. "he's a whore" also works incredibly well in the context of Songs About Fucking.

I think the way Metallica approach covers is masterful. I won't say they're better than the originals, because art is in the eye of the beholder. But they put so much effort into maintaining a level of faithfulness, while adding their own touch, attention to detail and arrangement. They really do justice for all the artists they cover and their love for them really comes through in their covers.

This isn’t a cover but it kind of counts. In all my years listening to hip hop I can think of very few songs better than the original sample. Ice Cube’s It Was A Good Day stands as one of the few exceptions. I love Isley Brothers but any time I hear Footsteps in the Dark I’d rather listen to Ice Cube’s “version”. Usually, if a funk or soul song had Parts I and II like Footsteps does, it indicates the song is amazing. But Footsteps is just above average. Good Day is so much more fun for me to listen to. I’m hardly an Ice Cube fan and barely know any of his songs but it’s how I feel.

I think it’s a solid cover. The vocals are good but it lacks audio ambience of the original which makes less emotional to listen to. When you listen to the Sade’s you can visualize the story due to the softer guitar and drum work.

It’s definitely not a bad cover but doesn’t resonate with me as much as the original.

See, I don't think War Pigs is such an amazing cover. Sure, they play it perfectly. But aside from Patton's obviously different vocals, it just sounds like a really good tribute band did the cover. It's too note-for-note perfect. I am not a fan of Black Sabbath, but if I was, that cover would give me absolutely no reason to listen to the cover. Since I am not a Black Sabbath fan, however, I prefer the FNM version since Patton has a better singing voice and the production is a little cleaner on it.
