Looking to get a Chromebook
« on: August 28, 2018, 09:49:49 PM »
I've got a junky little Chinese tablet that's slow as Hell, but I'd like to have something better [preferably with a keyboard to go with it]. I've been looking around at some Chromebooks, since they seem to fit the bill best in terms of price and functionality. I don't need an expensive beast to play all my AAA PC games [I've got a desktop for that], just something under $400 that I can haul around with me or mess around with when I'm in bed.

Anybody have an experience with these or know of what's good?

I have one, the ASUS C201, paid ~$200. Doesn't have a touch screen so I dunno how mobile games fare on these. The build is light, no vents but it doesn't heat up much and stays quiet.

If you're just using it to browse I don't think you can go wrong with any model.
Mine is on the lower end but it loads quick even on threads like "What are you listening to?" where there a ton of embed videos.
Battery life is great as chrome doesn't have to share RAM   :doge
I still get around 10~ hours on a full charge after a year of heavy use

Everything else computer related is pretty streamlined though. File management is reduced to a single downloads window. Things like built-in archiving are barebones, so unless you find an app on the web store you're SOL. I think this the only archiver out there, also shows a screenshot of the downloads window.
Video player and music work fine, there is a vlc player you can download but again it's pretty stripped back too.

Think I've just told you a bunch of stuff you already know but I'd reccomend one just as a better web browser. Having extensions like adblock on a relatively mobile device is great.

The Pixelbook is supposed to be the best, but its price is absurd.

Found a couple of recommendation lists:

https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413071,00.asp
https://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/laptops/best-chromebooks-top-5-chromebooks-in-the-us-1233696

I like to use The Wirecutter for a lot of recommendations.  Their pick is the ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip that's $459 on Amazon right now.
https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-chromebook/

Specs show:
12.5-inch Touchscreen
Convertible Chromebook
Intel Core m3
4GB RAM
64GB Flash Storage (Expandable with Micro SD)
All-Metal Body
USB Type C
Corning Gorilla Glass
Backlit Keyboard

$400 seems like a lot for a junky Chromebook. My wife uses an old iPad mini and a bluetooth keyboard shell/case thing. I assume there's something like that for an Android tablet too if you wanted.

I'm thinking about getting this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y31BH12/?coliid=I114TNEVKKSPVC&colid=T6L6UZDX0IQQ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Not bad on the price and the tech looks decent enough for what I want to use it for [web-browsing, typing, streaming]. Might even grab a used one, since the Amazon Warehouse has it for just $270.

Seems good except for the dinky screen size. I used a 10-11 incher for a year and I can't ever go back to that.

A bigger screen would be nice, sure, but I'm trying to keep the cost low while still getting most of what I want. I could potentially go up a little bit from that price, but if I get something for less than $300 I'd be really happy.

Chinese companys offer some of the best bang for the buck. I eying this one right now:

https://www.lightinthebox.com/en/p/jumper-laptop-notebook-ezbook-x4-14inch-lcd-intel-celeron-intel-gemini-lake-n4100-4gb-ddr4-128gb-ssd-4gb-windows10_p6688643.html

Getting great reviews as well. Not just the tech inside, but also a solid keyboard, looks nice as well.

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/jumper-ezbook-x4

I have a Xiaomi smartphone and the quality for the price is fantastic.

Another option is the Teclast Tbook F7:

https://www.gearbest.com/laptops/pp_1682917.html

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/teclast-f7

Both are proper laptops with a 14 inch screen and should be around 300 bucks.

Typing is gonna be an issue, but for bed-browsing, media (I got it for mostly comic reading), and basic shit, I got an Amazon Fire 8 HD tablet for under $100.  It can be a little slow sometimes but overall works great and was cheap as hell.

Ended up buying the ASUS R13 Chromebook [$320 + another $60 for some extra stuff I needed]. I really like it so far, it feels really sturdy and has all the functionality that I was looking for. I'm actually posting on it right now while sitting in bed watching TV.

Looking to get a Chromebook

Don't.

Unless you're going to use it like a Netbook (EG: Web surfing, word, excel, etc. online) it's basically a butt/thin-client laptop. You're better off buying a $400 laptop and getting more out of it if you plan to use it for anything non-Android/butt-Android purposed.

Edit: Damn it, Golden Retriever. I tried to warn you, but too late. Now to invent a time machine to go back and stop you and kill Hitler then myself.

Uh...I went out and bought exactly what I wanted, which was a large tablet with laptop-lite functionality. If I wanna do real computer stuff, I've got a desktop PC for that, and I've got a Switch for on-the-go videogaming.

Grabbed an ASUS C101, the cheapest one that can run Linux apps right now. Gotta say, this has been great. There's a good cache of Android games I enjoy playing that aren't on desktop, and the ability to develop my web apps has been great.

Screen is too small though but it is ridiculously portable at least.

But....why?

At that price just get a laptop.

I was on the same page, but Sho Nuff recently promoted the idea to me. He said that, at that pricepoint, it's super peppy, does what you want, and stays consistent with having your stuff available anywhere. Sounded pretty good to me.

In contrast, the last $400 lappy I bought was a netbook: slower than frozen oatmeal, puny screen, unhappy keyboard, and didn't do ANYTHING well.

Just a 10-inch screen, right? Yeah, that's pretty small. The R13 has, in accordance with its name, a 13-inch screen, which feels minuscule compared to my desktop's monitor, but for most things it's just fine.

13 is the sweet spot. 15 is just too bulky for me.

Stupidest shit ever so far: lack of Duo compatibility.

Like, not having a web version is BS to begin with, but then you restrict the Android version to like 2 random ass Chromebooks and tell everyone else to fuck off.

It's 12.3 inches, but the HP Chromebook x2 has the same screen as the Pixelbook, which is the current leader among the bunch.

Also, depending on how big the screen sizes are, the Pixel Slate and Pixelbook 2 (getting announced Tuesday) should take the crown -- the former being 3000x2000 in resolution, the latter being full 4K.
