Is Netflix going to play the "We poor because you all download things!" game like the DVD publishers did?

While at the same time pouring billions into Adam Sandler content?  :doge

It's annoying although over here it feels like the market has kinda consolidated and there is not much choice besides Netflix. I guess the US is always more competitive with media stuff like that, maybe we will get other services by big publishers later on.

Also this reminds me that I haven used Netflix in maybe a year and I should cancel my subscription  :doge

According to Sandvine, file-sharing accounts for 3 percent of global downstream and 22 percent of upstream traffic, with 97% of that traffic in turn being BitTorrent.

Sounds bad!

Quote
Back in 2011, Sandvine stated that BitTorrent accounted for 52.01% of upstream traffic on fixed broadband networks in North America. By 2015, BitTorrent’s share of upstream traffic on these networks had dipped to 26.83 percent, largely thanks to the rise in quality, inexpensive streaming alternatives to piracy.

JK nvm.

Quote
But Sandvine notes that trend is now reversing slightly, with BitTorrent’s traffic share once again growing worldwide. That’s especially true in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, where BitTorrent now accounts for 32% of all upstream network traffic.

Dialectical synthesis. :rejoice

Actually HBO does have a streaming service if you're with Ziggo, which I am. But it doesn't even mention any Curb, Sopranos or any of those on the HBO Ziggo page. It's just a bunch of BS about Game of Thrones. When I had the first free month for HBO it didn't even have Sopranos available to watch... yea fuck that

I'm not paying them 7 euro's extra per month because I want to watch some Curb.

Oh come on. Only stupid fucking people don't know how to game this system.

Netflix offers a family plan, split the family plan with your friends or family.

HBO doesn't care if you share your account.

Hulu & showtime come free with Spotify student discount, find someone in your stupid family that is still a student, use their credentials.

Amazon video is included with prime, who the hell doesn't have Amazon prime now? Not to mention you can split that with one other person as well.

Not to mention some of the above services are discounted with various cell phone providers. For example T-Mobile gives you a discount on Netflix.

It's so cheap to get these packages now than ever before.  And how much TV and entertainment can some people consume? It's overwhelming

But of course.

People used to complain about paying for cable, but now they are in a worse predicament. In order to get their fix of all the media they want to consume, some of which is exclusive to different streaming services, they have to either pay for multiple ones, or pirate it.

On top of the expenses adding up, shit is just plain ol confusing for the customer.

Something is gonna give eventually and there will emerge a catch all service similar to cable that offers streaming packages from various platforms.

I think in the end cable might just be streaming in the future. If cable companies made their own streaming and all this shit went on it, and you could pick which channels you want, I think people would prefer that. But of course, they're digging their heels. It's inevitable I would think.

Well yeah. And they already have that to some extent, it's just so dumb and clunky. On demand has been around forever. They just need to make everything on demand.

I'm currently paying for Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and the WWE Network. And I'm probably gonna drop the WWE Network, 1) because they're really, really fucking bad lately outside of NXT, and I can watch the weekly NXT show on Hulu and 2) I'll use that money on HBO Now in January once True Detective comes back.

I haven't torrented anything outside of the HD RE4 pc game mod in years. Honestly, I don't even bother to use most of the services I have regularly because I hate ongoing episodic tv.

The last thing I pirated was LOGH for my rewatch and that was last November/December. I pirate maybe once every few years now. Now that I've got money pirating seems so...pointless unless it's something that hasn't and won't be released in America.

Worth mentioning that during this same time frame cable companies have squeezed consumers more and more trying to make up lost ground to cord cutters. And given the monopolistic stranglehold they have in most markets thats a pretty easy thing to get away with.

I know that in my area for instance Cox has raised the price of their high speed internet to nearly $110 a month for 100MB downloads(which you never get) after the introductory rate. Less than 2 years ago that non-introductory rate was $64.99.

Now that I've got money pirating seems so...

I pirate because the companies that aren't iTunes won't let me download shit to watch offline. And finding Netflix's series off-Netflix is like pulling teeth. Fuck all the companies. Until they give me the means to "archive" the shit I buy off them, they can fuck themselves.

If streaming services do the following I will stop pirating -

- Each service must create an api, so I or someone like me can create a uniform front end that serves all these in the background, with me only having to enter my api key for the service.
- Regions need to fuck off.

I'll happily pay, but not it you're asking me to pay AND be inconvenienced, fuck that. I only buy obscure blu rays and anime movies ( :( ) these days lmao

"Gaming the system" sounds like a stupid amount of work when you can achieve better coverage just from a public torrent site. It's not like your way of not paying for content is morally superior to just downloding the shit you need.

Can't remember the last time I pirated something. It's been years.

This is me, too.

I was the guy that wanted to support digital sales and rentals from the outset. Unfortunately the region-lock bullshit has turned me into an expert on which content providers will screw me (summary: Amazon can get fucked, Apple has my back). I have refused to use VPN to bypass: if I'm a customer, let me have my goods without having to monkey around with additional technology.

Also, carriers have stated they're working to combat VPNs — WHY? Yeah, I know there are contracts covering regional distribution rights - blah, blah, blah — we're talking about customers who have valid accounts for the region in which they're paying. That's the only thing the IP owners and distributors are allowed to police, IMNERHO.

But by-and-large I'm using the local streaming services, no VPN, and it's easier than pirating.

I only ever pirated anime, so after Crunchyroll took off it's just become way easier for me to just grab a subscription to that and watch anime on my TV instead of going through the effort of downloading stuff off some torrent site and then putting in its proper Plex folder. Also got a sub to Prime Video, Netflix, and HIDIVE, but I don't watch those nearly as much.

My Xfinity box when I do searches shows results from Netflix and soon to be Amazon prime;  my PS4 has a "TV" tab that shows Netflix / Hulu / Amazon Prime because I'm logged in.. I believe Xbox extends that to searching across all of those services.

What you are asking for.. essentially exists.
