I watch most of my Youtube stuff on a Roku, which only plays pre-video ads. It's pretty nice.

I have to kill the tedium at work. I can't use an adblocker at work. We don't allow plugins. I also don't run root anymore on my phone. Used to.

The Roku app is fine until it isn't and preloads the same commercial over and over and over on every video. I just gave up and subscribed.

Youtube is such a shitty company for putting the run the app in background mode "feature" behind a paywall when every other app does it for free.

Spotify tells me I can listen to 30 minutes for free by "watching a quick video" and I can do it while not watching the video.

Firefox for Android supports addons, including native uBlock Origin. So if one didn't mind watching via the browser that's an option.

If it were just a couple of bucks a month, I'd consider it, but when I can block all the ads on a PC anyway?  Nope.  That shit costs more than some of the regular streaming services I use.

It's $12 now.  I'm not paying them $12 a month to unblock ads that I'm already not seeing on a PC, where I do 95% of my YT watching, anyway.

And they should probably stop that.  But as a service cost wise Spotify isn't remotely comparable to a massive video service.

You guys are complaining about a service that loses money;  but this thread is a good reason why it does... and why they charge $12.. and why they try their best to force ads on mobile where a lot of people don't have any ad block solution.

I get being annoyed by it; but your statement was dumb.  "Why dis ting dat loose money try to make money?  Durrr"

Good news: I installed an update on my phone and now Youtube runs in the background. So suck it with your fake explanations, riotous!

Why not filter all ads at the network level with something like pfsense?

The killer feature of YouTube prem is background playback on mobile. Often shite quality tunes, but great for finding new stuff.

YouTube's been profitable for a few years now, but for sure running a video site isn't a walk in the park either and people gotta get paid somehow.

YouTube Premium is an answer to the creators complaining about inconsistent revenue and undesirable ads running on their videos, as well as anti-ad privacy advocates (with ads targeted to kids drawing a lot of ire.) For over 10 years, ads were the only way to make money on the site, and not everyone liked that. Tech nerds in particular used to say a lot "if there were a way to pay to get rid of ads I'd do it in a heart beat! Google is being so stupid."

YouTube itself is one of the greatest achievements of modern humans. Go to this website: http://www.everysecond.io/youtube

It's staggering in scale. In any other era people would be forking over money hand over fist to get access to YouTube.

The solution today if you're unhappy with YouTube and wish to deprive them of revenue is to use another service.

We use a couple off the shelf filters, but they're not as strong as they should be. It's really unfortunate.

What’s the point of YouTube premium and YouTube music if you can just dl an app that lets music play in the background for free, log into your YouTube account;etc? I personally just use Musi.
