At first I thought you meant the movie. Kids have to start setting up spy cams just to see a nipple and humping pastries to get off.

Updated my Newgrounds account from 2007 and intend to start using the site much more. :rejoice

Became a supporter to change me name too. :jawalrus

So glad that not only is NG still around but that it's stayed true to itself all this time. :)

I had another account from '05 I could have updated, but not sure if I want my current self to be connected to it. :P

I always wanted to get into DeviantArt but the I never really cared for the site (felt too "heavy") and I didn't really get into "community" either... NG feels like home in comparison.

I don't even really post much stuff, but I fucking love the indie artist spirit of these kinds of sites, and I'm totally OK with NG taking whatever mantle Tumblr had for this stuff.

Is Tom Fulp (right?) still the head of Nrwgrounds? Never met him, but he's a friend of an IRL childhood friend. Or was. I haven't talked to them in like 5 years. She went kinda crazy.

So show me.gif

But isn't newgrounds a flash site? Weird place to go to for stills and gifs. :thinking

I mean people should just tell the folks migrating to Twitter/et. al. that there's Mastodon (https://mastodon.social/about), you have to make the server if you want to 100% own it, but at that point you can post whatever the fuck you want. A la reddit, but without the reddit admin oversights.

You can NSFW tag your stuff, to where it doesn't show. Problem is: It's like Twitter so curation of things you post is harder than Tumblr.

But isn't newgrounds a flash site? Weird place to go to for stills and gifs. :thinking

It's not good for IRL GIFs. Or porn for that matter.

But they do have a large thriving art portal and blog system, and I think Fulp's said they'll be bringing in some features from Tumblr next year (though they're being really selective about it, as to not turn NG into something it's not.)

Porn may end up on Twitter for a while before it gets big and Twitter pulls a Tumblr. If anything, three months ago Twitter was by far the more likely choice for which of the two would start being super puritanical about porn.

Newgrounds is still a private, founder-owned company, that has already survived for 20+ years without Google Ads (and the rest of the major, most-profitable anti-NSFW ad networks) because it hasn't budged on adult content since it began, and likely never will.

Twitter? You're rolling the same dice you rolled with Tumblr. Just sayin'.

There's a feed for people and things you follow.

No native app but Fulp encourages people to pin the web app to the homescreen, with more mobile optimizations on the way.

What's the harm in just doing an account on each? It's free anyway.
Twitter is shit for posting art (which is what i'm doing) but it has a bigger audience, it's all there is to it, really.
But just do an account on both, it literally takes 2 minutes.

I think redundancy is a virtue when it comes to data, so I agree. People should put their content in as many places as they feel comfortable.

Although, taking that to the extreme, the best way to go *would* be a self-hosted Mastodon instance. But it seems people don't quite care enough about owning their content to do that (in addition to social accounts.)

can u imagine being this ignorant of what ur own site is

like, deadass thats mostly what people used tumblr for, whether they admitted to it or not, that and rp blogs (which mostly devolved into porn anyways so)

I get tumblr thinks their shit doesn't stink and they wanna uphold some "moral standard" (??????) by banning all the porn but thats not what ur site is hombre, gj on killing yourself off and fuck u bc now all those weirdos are in the hentai community on twitter & we have to deal with them but w/e thats a different story

ultimately this just continues the trend of major companies trying to curate their image by banning anything deemed "morally impure" by puritanical standards which feels incredibly contradictory given how "progressive" everyone wants to be seen in 2018, how being sex positive is cool now and then u have business like Tumblr & co suddenly going "nah nope we want to maintain a pure website despite the fact that its not what the majority of our userbase uses it for"

ig you could call it tone deaf?? but honestly this trend towards scrubbing urself of anything remotely horny is hilarious to me & i cant wait to see how it plays out, it'll either blow up in everyones face miserably bc the places that are OK with u being horny or just dont care in general will see a sudden influx of users and those places will prosper while others will shrivel up and die, or eventually this will become the norm again & everyone will return to the status quo of being hyper sex negative and freaking out over anything remotely lewd

I'm sure your "like deadass" comment is more accurate than the server stats they have.  (I read porn was 11% of Tumblr in one article.. and it's the 11% of Tumblr they can't put advertising on.. so yeah, I'm sure it will "kill them" to remove it!)
hey hopefully ur right & they continue on into oblivion bc outside of the porn tumblr was a good support structure for some of my friends through the communities built there, but

Look I'm not arguing that there couldn't be a domino effect;  but most of Tumblr wasn't porn.. and ALL of the profitable part of Tumblr wasn't porn.

Granted you cut off that 11% and some of the 89% will follow..

.. but their app got removed from the iOS app store, that probably reprsents a HUGE portion of their revenue.. so they were likely "dead" either way, however removing porn to try to get back on the app store is probably the better business decision.
I didnt know abt their app being removed- all the info I get is second-hand from friends who use the site constantly (&I dont think they knew that was the reason either? I'll have to ask-) but yea in that case seems like they were put between a rock & a hard place, now i feel bad for them

Trust the plan.

Edit: the app thing really screwed them though, IMO and is probably what made this happen.

Does yahoo groups have an app? Because a lot of those are just basically porn sharing too. I’m just relatively sure that porn is view like me through a lot more apps than just umblr.

What percentage of users are part of the backlash?

https://tech.slashdot.org/story/18/12/05/2318211/a-quarter-of-tumblrs-users-are-there-to-consume-porn-data-scientists-estimate#comments

Quote
This study was based on the behavior of 130 million users, about half of Tumblr's entire user base. Of that number, "adult content consumers are 22 percent of our sample," the study said. "At the time of the study, roughly 30 million active accounts were consuming adult content, either re-sharing it or following the accounts of those producers," Luca Aiello, one of the study's authors and now a senior research scientist at Nokia Bell Labs told Motherboard in an email. "I expect this audience to experience a noticeable drop in engagement: some of them will just churn out, many of them will likely reduce considerably the time spent on the platform."

Another 28 percent, or roughly 40 million users, encountered pornography unintentionally on Tumblr. That means they didn't seek out the porn, but they followed someone who pushed it into their feed. "The extent of this exposure is hard to estimate but it's probably not major," Aiello said. "Therefore, I believe some people in this segments would be happy to have a cleaner Tumblr feed but I don't expect a significant lift in their engagement, overall." Crucially, the study found that Tumblr's userbase was more female than many social networks ("we estimate that the average user age is 26 and 72 percent of the users are female," they wrote.) They found that these demographics held up between porn consumers and non porn consumers on the site, and that, in fact, young women between the ages of 20-25 were consuming porn on the site at a higher rate than young men. This means that Tumblr's crackdown will likely disproportionately affect women porn consumers.

Now granted, this is a study based on accounts and doesn't factor in that people could view tumblr blogs without an account... so gain of salt on how big a backlash this.

What percentage of users are part of the backlash?
The first way to look at this is "what percentage of accounts are involved in pornographic content?" VICE reports that 22% of all users were direct consumers of pornographic content and that another 28% indirectly consumed it by following accounts that reblogged porn but were not the original producers. That was in 2016. The other way to look at it is to directly measure what percentage of traffic goes to adult content on Tumblr. According to SimilarWeb in 2017 this was about 20% of all clicks.

You can confidently say that a fifth of all "activity" on Tumblr was definitely porn related, and that approximately half of all Tumblr users were comfortable with pornographic content appearing in their feed, or even appreciated its existence (in the same way that I don't have a Facebook account necessarily because I want political content, but I am happy that I have the option to consume it and that it does appear in my timeline on occasion). In short, this is a significant chunk of the userbase, but like you pointed out earlier, there is a larger non-porn consuming userbase on Tumblr than a porn consuming one, and this is the only way they can stay on the iOS app store.

How does Tumblr compete with Instagram after it kills the porn content? I dunno. It probably can't.
