Living in motels

Has anyone here ever tried this? What's it like? What's the cheapest way you can do this? Thinking of trekking across America (or other countries) in extended stay hotels. Looking at you, Jack Remington!

Fuck motels, camp sites 4life. Motels can get prohibitively expensive when used consistently over the course of over a week. Maybe look into some form of couch surfing?

I need to be able to work, which means wi-fi and private room (or shared room but with at most, one person). So this is somewhere between hostel hitchhiking and permanent residency.

Extended stay hotels aren't expensive. I'd imagine you can mix in some decent 3 star spots (like a Marriott Residence Inn) alongside cheaper extended stay motels. Just so you don't feel like you're slumming it all the time.

I like nice hotels obviously but there's something about staying in a cheap hotel and briefly seeing people come and go from all types of backgrounds, stories etc. Ordering cheap Chinese food and talking to some random dude who tells you Vietnam stories.

I stayed in a motel in the colorado Texas border. The room next to me had this car, some beat up camaro. It was truly creepy. The thing had this aura about it. Just wrong. Thats the coolest shit about motel slumming. You could be sleeping next door to a hammer based serial killer

You're welcome. :trumps

Note this requires mobile wifi towers in the area, but given most campgrounds are in mobile/cell tower range (keyword: MOST) I highly doubt this would be a problem.

4G should be enough to telecommute depending on what the hell you're doing. But even then, you could use the public library with a VPN or something if you were that desperate. But if an internet connection is something you need for working, doing the couch-surfing thing probably isn't a good idea.

Wouldn't this be more expensive than rent? Like even a cheap 2 star motel is what, like $70/night these days? $70 x 30 days = $2,100 and you can probably get a place at least as good as a 2 star motel for like <$1,500/month rent, right?

Or rent a room in a house for like $500-700/month.

You can get a lower rate for stays over a month at extended-stay places. But yeah, it might be more expensive. I haven't checked bnb pricing yet... The issue with renting a room is that it's hard to do a lease under 6-months. I'm trying to do one, two month stays. I think this might be more doable in Asia.

I've got a friend who went back packing across America. Don't know why. I think he's like one of them Forrest Gump types. Anyway, he told me he got woken up one night by a bunch of raccoons stealing his shit. When he tried to chase them off they mobbed up and gang stomped him. Ended up in hospital. Lol.
