Thoughts on Zelda's "Timeline"
« on: December 28, 2018, 12:39:55 PM »
Recently Nintendo has said multiple times that Breath of the Wild doesn't belong to any of the "timelines" that Nintendo & Co. have desperately tried to make a thing for a while now.

It reminded me how I initially thought most of it is forced bullshit, because that's pretty much what it was, but I did like the direction they were going post-Ocarina.

While it's nice to have a game just be it's own little thing, something I appreciated about TP and all the WW games was that it actually handled the whole timeline business really well.

When they put their mind to it, the Wind Waker games and Twilight Princess both get props for handling the games as great continuations of both timelines.

Overall I'm a bit conflicted when it comes to what I want to see next, even though it matters fuck all.

Yes, the Zelda timeline is totally dumb bullshit, but I'm mainly focusing on the games that have clearer ties to each other post-Ocarina.

Thoughts? :doge

My favorite Zelda timeline is the one where Link is actually evil and Ganon is the hero of time so he has to save Zelda

I suppose the timeline only really matters when it's supposed to be the same Link/Zelda/Ganon incarnations as a prior game, and then it's almost better to drop the last two and let Link have his own adventure.

Though I guess what matters more is what world and gameplay they want to setup, because they can always stick it somewhere in the timeline after the fact.

Almost everything from Ocarina to Zelda DS 2 is pretty blatantly following up each other. So the whole thing wouldn't even have been that stupid if you just said that the old games are some centuries later. But then they started that whole thing explaining triple timelines and whatnot and now it's just irredeemably dumb.

They tried to fix something that didn't need fixing.

I love the references to the previous games. In my view the 'story' of Zelda has always been more of a religious/mythological thing.
So the 'legend' that is told over the ages and that you play differ from the actual events. However as with every religion or myth there's some clues or references to find in history to the actual events.

That's pretty much what Nintendo did in the Wind Waker with the glass stained window representing the sages and the statue of Link.
It wasn't 100% what happened, but close enough for a "legend". The same thing happened with BOTW.
The Statue of Hylia from Skyward Sword is there for example hidden in a temple. Possibly moved over the ages and then forgotten.
And there's tons of places named after the Legends(other Zelda games) of old.

The only thing that is explained rather poorly is the '100 years' slumber thing in BOTW.
Some characters are over 100 years old (and still alive) and all this time the world seemingly hasn't changed that much compared to 100 years ago.
It would've worked just as well with a 10, 30 or even 50 year slumber. The 100 years thing felt kinda unecessary given that time hadn't changed much compared to where things were at just after the Calamity.

I liked the sunken kingdom in Wind Waker. Otherwise - meh. Zelda continuity is lame and I don't understand why people want more. Actually, maybe they do because the games themselves are pretty sparse? :thinking

at least you understand zelda's deep lore is for the most part hacked on. zelda series is for most part good, it's going to work when they actually plan for something versus throwing shit at the wall.

Hey dumdums here's how it works

1. Ganon is bad
2. Link is summoned to use the magic sword to whoop his ass
3. But not before building a train or driving a boat or some stupid shit to waste time
4. Go back to step 1

There I solved it. Now go get a boyfriend or girlfriend, NERD

The best Zelda MM doesn't even have Ganon :idont Neither the best 2D one (minish cap). They must be in the quality timeline, opposite to where Wind Waker is.

You accidentally didn't type Link's Awakening like you intended.

Maybe, it's like, a legend, and every game is a different telling or version of the legend. :doge The 'Ganon is back every century and so is Link' explanation ala Castelvania with Dracula and the Belmonts works too I guess. It's just vidya, whatever man. :trumps
