Gotta give it to final Fight but I prefer it. I prefer the weapons and the characters as well as the enemies. But the music in SoR is clearly superior.

If it was just Final Fight 1 and Streets of Rage 1, I'd give the edge to FF. But looking at the main trilogy of each series, I'd give it easily to Streets of Rage.

Final Fight is a classic and is the game that so many other beat-em-ups copied, much like Street Fighter II was for fighting games.  The original (arcade version) still holds up and is fun to play.  Never really got much from Final Fight 2 or 3, however.  Whatever magic the original has is just not there.

Streets Of Rage is easily the best home console-only beat-em-up series and the best home console beat-em-ups from the 16-bit era. The audio on the first two games is also superb (never been big on the third game's music).

So out of those two series, Final Fight is the best arcade beat-em-up and Streets Of Rage is the best home console beat-em-up from that time period.

Since then, I'd add games like Guardian Heroes, Sengoku 3, and Double Dragon Advance to that list...

...and more recently, the amazing, stunning, HOLY FUCK WOW Fight'N Rage on PC.  Play that!

I played SoR3 the other day and it was real bad. The American version is completely buggered as they decided to up the difficulty to a ridiculous degree that isn’t present in the Japanese orignal.

Nowadays if I'm going to play that, I always fire up Bare Knuckle III.  BTW the recent Sega Genesis collection from last year lets you play the Japanese versions of the SoR games.

Also fuck both Sega and Capcom for how they treated these games after the 90s.  Sega just ignored SoR and Capcom, aside from a decent FFone GBA port, kept on letting shitty new FF games like Streetwise and Revenge come out.

I hope the new SoR coming out ends up good and I hope that maybe this will inspire Capcom to do something new with Final Fight.

Correct this. Play Final Fight arcade. It’s on 360 and ps3.

Get the Capcom Beat 'Em Up bundle on PS4, Xbone, PC, or Switch.

Or better yet, get the arcade ROM and add the Sega CD soundtrack to it.  I need to do this!

Having recently played FF with my son (arcade version), I've come to realize that the friendly fire kinda sucks and that the vertical walking plain is pretty damn shallow for most stages.  Still top notch gameplay and satisfying brawl material though.  I'd say FF if it weren't for SOR2.  Sega slam dunked it with that game.  And Koshiro's tunes took the series eons beyond what videogame music should be.

I guess I think SoR is technically the better series, but I was an arcade/SNES kid so FF has that nostalgia factor...and I'd rather play original FFA than any of the SoR's.

I loved all those beat-em-ups except for Pit Fighter.  :bolo

I think my favorite was the Konami Aliens one, but I remember trying it again years later and it not holding up...not going to circle back.

*edit Pit Fighter was more just a shitty fighter thinking back on?

This is a tough one, now that I've played both series I'd say Streets of Rage. But as an SNES/Arcade kid I'd have gone with Final Fight. Also FF has Haggar!

Don't play Final Fight on SNES.  It's kinda shit- missing a whole stage, a character (either Guy or Cody depending on the version) less enemies on-screen, and is censored.  Play the arcade version.

You also can only play 1 player.  That was a big deal back in day in the FF/SoR debate.

I would rank FF on Sega CD and SoR2 on the same level.  Both are great games.

It's way better than the SNES port (and handled by Sega, IIRC- pretty sure that's the Daytona USA guy doing the vocals in that video above!) although not arcade perfect and the U.S. version is still mildly censored...but it's 2P and has all the content!

Definitely one of the games I wanted to play really badly back in the day.  When I finally got a CDX in '96 I jumped on a brand new copy of the game I found at a Toys R Us for $10!  Was there buying N64 systems for my boss but had to stop to check the games section.   :lol :-[  Played the shit out of it.

Yeah FF SCD was done by Sega, similar to most other Capcom games on the Genesis like Ghouls N Ghosts and Strider - it was a way for Capcom to get around their contract with Nintendo and be able to release their games on other platforms.
