The Epic Series/Franchise Playthrough Challenge
« on: January 29, 2007, 08:29:37 PM »
This is a simple challenge to play through a game series from start to finish, for those interested.  I thought it would be fun to play the various incarnations of a franchise in order, just to observe the evolution in graphics, gameplay, and innovation(if any) a series goes through over the years.  Anyone interested in participating can choose their series and post it here, and begin their playthrough this Saturday, February 3nd.  To keep this thread from bloating or going off-topic, only post your updates and observations as you complete each game in the series.  There's no particular date for a deadline, although you can set your own personal deadline goal if you want.

Guidelines:

1.  You must play trhough the entire series or franchise in order, by either sequel number (i.e. Final Fantasy series) or publication date (i.e. Medal of Honor series).  Each game must be completed.
2.  The series or franchise must have at least two sequels.
3.  Original (not remakes) entries in your chosen series or franchise that are only available on handhelds or PC are optional.
4.  It doesn't have to be a series or franchise you like or enjoy.  You can choose to punish yourself, if you wish.  Some gamers enjoy digital sadomasochism.  Whatever floats your boat, sailor.
5. The series or franchise can be from any genre (shooter, racing, rpg, etc.)

I'll be choosing the Medal of Honor series.  Yes, I realize I will be suffering for this decision at certain points.  I'll be playing the following games in the following order (I've opted not to play the handheld games, and I've included Vanguard since it will probably be released by the time I finish the others):

1.  Medal of Honor (PS1)
2.  MOH: Underground (PS1)
3.  MOH:  Allied Assault (PC)
4.  MOH: Frontline (Xbox)
5.  MOH:  Allied Assault Spearhead (PC)
6.  MOH:  Allied Assault Breakthrough (PC)
7.  MOH:  Rising Sun (Xbox)
8.  MOH:  Pacific Assault  (PC)
9.  MOH: European Assault (Xbox)
10.  MOH: Vanguard (March 2007, PS2)

I'm probably going to regret this.

Anyway, anyone interested just sign up here, and pick your series.  I won't say not to choose a series someone else has already picked, but I would like to see some variation.  Have fun, or have pain.  Your choice!

I shall play through all of the Warcraft campaigns, starting with 1 through Frozen Throne. I'll probably give up 30 minutes into Warcraft 1, but hey! IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS.

I thought this was going to an Epic Megagames thread :(

With the challenge of completing all the episodes of Super ZZT

Anyway this is a fun idea. I might do F-Zero

Haha, I think playing Super ZZT for 10 minutes is probably too much, and my PC has real issues with DOS games.

Anyway Ive decided to rock a playthrough of the Resident Evil Series, although I'll mix up the platforms a bit...

Resident Evil (DS) - Its a straight port of the original.
Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (DC)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (DC)
REmake (GC)
Resident Evil 4 (PS2) - I would rather be playing the GC but I dont own a copy so PS2 it is.

I'll expect this mammoth challenge to last me several months.

Can I go backwards and start with FF XII?

And do the tactics games count?

Tactics would be optional, depending on how thorough you want your playthrough to be.  You can go backwards, as long as you complete the series.

Holy shit at the mention of Super ZZT! Thought nobody remembered that one, although ZZT still has quite the active community. I guess Super ZZT never took off because most didn't know about the editor functions, and most of the new additions were fairly pointless.

I would do this if I didn't have school. Maybe I'll try it once the semester is over.

You don't have to do it all at once, as in 72 hours of straight gaming or anything, Beezy.  You just have to play the games in order.  You can take breaks, have dinner, sleep, work, study, etc.  It's just an experiment to see how games progress throughout the course of a series - what's improved, what becomes worse, etc.  If you play the games in order, I think you get a purer experience, that's all.

Man Chris' game is real actual survival horror. Tons of zombies and shit all bullets, for a game with such dated graphics its still remarkably tense, DS + Headphones FTW. The VA is still fun and the game is still a blast, but Im an RE fanboy I think. Havent played RE2 for a number of years but I remember it being far superior

Is anybody else bothering with this challenge thing?

I played through THPS 1-4, AND THUG 1&2 DOING ALL GOALS IN EVERY GAME ON THE HARDEST DIFFICULTY LEVELS AVAILABLE IN 24 HOURS.

Project 8 is, by a wide margin, the hardest game in that series.

I've got midwinter break next week, so nine days off from work. I shall take one for the team and play all my shitty Gundam games.

Dreamcast:
Mobile Suit Gundam: EFF vs. Zeon & DX (JP)
Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise from the Ashes

Gamecube:
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Ace Pilot (JP)
SD Gundam Gashapon Wars (JP)

Playstation:
Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Assault 2

Playstation 2:
Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo
Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front
Mobile Suit Gundam: Lost War Chronicles (JP)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam Vs. Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (JP)
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Never Ending Tomorrow
Mobile Suit Gundam: One Year War (JP)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Climax UC (JP)
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Union Vs. ZAFT (JP)
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Union Vs. ZAFT II (JP)
M.S. Saga: A New Dawn

But wait, there's more! I'll also play all the way through Another Century's Episode AND Another Century's Episode 2!!

I'll probably be a blubbering mess by the end of the week.

I would like to do a playthrough of all the Ultima games in a week, but I don't think our technology is advanced enough yet to handle Ultima IX.

They'll be mine one of these days. I can garauntee that I will pick up Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight the very same day I get a PS3.*

*I'll probably be able to pick it up for $10 at that point.

Gundam Musou looks HOT.

Yeah, Gundam Musou is out in March. I'm sure there will be a US release, unless you're really itching for something new to play.

Gundam Musou would totally be a system seller if I could justify dropping $500 on a PS3.

I've started the DMC series.

I'm going to play all three, even though from all reports DMC2 is a steaming pile of shit.
