Anyone get Ace Combat 7?
« on: February 01, 2019, 09:17:11 PM »
I've never been able to get into Ace Combat games. Played them since the first one (by playing them I mean playing like an hour and quitting out of boredom). Even got a flight stick for one of the PS2 ones. I dunno, I just find graphically the games being a bunch of nothing besides some sky and your plane and some dots in the distance hard to get into. I didn't play any of them after PS2 though. I used to be really into the X-wing/Tie Fighter games back in the day but it felt like there was more visually going on to pull me in. Same with Wing Commander and the FMV story stuff. Idk, subjective.

So anyhow I was gonna pass on AC7 even though I've heard it's pretty good and continuing the Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts 3 renaissance of old-school style Japanese games with modern flashy visuals.
But then I was reading some post today and saw that it comes with a 4k/1080p port of AC5 which is supposed to be like the best or one of the better ones in the series.
And it's only available until 2/18 and they're not planning on selling it separately.

Anyhow, I've only played the Ace Combat games in Japanese and if anyone picked up AC7 are the US versions of the games dual audio? Tried googling and it looks like AC7 is but I can't find any info on AC5.

I think Im on mission 8 on hard mode. I've replayed the first 4 missions a fuck ton to get better. I also fly using expert mode, standard is quite nice, but expert allows for more agility.

The game is nuts. Very satisfying game to get better at, tons of replayability with unlocking planes, weapons, and parts. Figuring out the best plane for each mission is great (later plane can S rank every mission quite easily lol).

I've found some design decisions in specific missions aggravating, but its a really good game in general.
OH!

So like, what's the appeal of Ace Combat's gameplay? Don't you just use the same tactics to dodge incoming missiles, get behind enemies and shoot them over and over again flying across the sky? I wish I could get into the series.

I never could get into Monster Hunter for a decade+ trying them all since MH1 similarly, but then MHW clicked and now I'm a huge MH fan so idk maybe I can still get into AC?

And to answer your question. No you don't. Different missions require different planes and different approaches.

Some missions I chose a more air combat jet that's fast and has a large amount of missiles because the mission requires you to be well aware of the enemies bombing run bombers that come in quick succession to attack the target, but also in this mission I still needed some air to ground capability as the ground troops could easily be overwhelmed. This mission required a balance of defense and some offense as the defense could be so easily overwhelmed, yet the desire to go on the offense to attack the bombers before the strike is there. So this mission requited some actual thinking beyond simple dog fighting.

One mission required you to destroy these sea platforms, but see lock on missiles were too slow to do the job because you're on a time limit. So you'd be doing a lot of strafing runs that would take too long. Even when you realize you can attack these core points. So what I realized after failing was that I had a jet with a rocket barrage attack that sent multiple non-lock on rockets. Sure I had to be careful as I had to manual aim in my strafing runs, but still one barrage was enough to take out the cores. So again this was more then simple dog fighting.

Another mission took place in a very mountainous region which required me to fly through jagged terrain to take out small missile installations. So chose a slower aircraft for more careful movement or a quick one and just be an ace pilot? Oh this leads to a pretty intense dogfight with a boss.

So really what makes these more then simple dogfights is the mission design. It's varied and requires some actual prep on your end. The unlocking of aircraft thanks to the tree I think also gives you some actual insight on what the planes do and thier roles.

Beyond that the core gameplay and dog fighting is always fun and intense. The planes are well realized. The stories are melodramatic fun. The music is at times epic. It;s just another example of awesome Japanese games with confident style.

7 is honestly a really good game and it just looks cool. The AC games just have that sleek and cool Namco art design. You know that feels like stylized Japanese art, but not super anime.

6 people seem to dislike? I don't know, I thought it was fun. The story was whatever, but some of the ace battles were really fun.

0 I did'nt play.

5 has a really good story and is maybe the best presentation wise and like 7 has really good and varied mission design. The story is more engaging, because there are actual centralized characters you follow.

4 is a fan favorite, but it's been years since I played it.

You may like the Japanese version of 3. It has a very cool 90s as fuck Ghost in the Shell/Macross cyperpunk asthetic and story. Also, a very cool ending twist. But it's pretty simple gameplay wise. The series has really moved past it, but it's unique.

The stories are very melodramatic, but one thing I think people don't realize is the stories are told by multiple characters and kind of in third person. They don't follow your "character" who is more of a plot device inside the story where the characters react to them. Even in three where your character is a bit more involved. And 5 where your a member of the story important squad.

But most importantly, you gotta like jets.

Thanks for that in-depth write up. I picked up 5/7 on PS4.

For the old games, is AC1 worth playing at all?
I see AC2 was remade with pretty decent graphics and VA on 3ds. Is that worth playing?

I'm gonna give 5 & 7 a shot and see if I can get into the series. If I can't then I still can't and if I can, I guess I can track down and play Zero after and then 3/4 and maybe 2 3DS?
I'm not into Jets at all and never been into non-space flight sims. I'm terrible at them and I just slow down and turn to try to get behind the target and then speed up and launch missiles. Is there anything that would help at learning how to play these games?

I haven't played anything older than 3, nor any of the handheld games. So I can't speak on those. AC3 Japanese version is a neat game because of the story and 90s anime presentation. I enjoyed it even though I was using a pretty bad translation. Since you are proficient in Japanese you'll probably get more out of it. Still as a game it's pretty basic. I think most see 4 as the watershed moment for the franchise. 5 and now 7 to me seem to be the best.

I almost want to recommend Assault Horizon to you. Fans dislike it as this is the Xbox 360/PS3 game where they really "Call of Dutyed" it up. I don't think it's a bad game, but it is a game where they tried to address "unexciting gameplay" critiques. They added this QTQ like dogfight mode where you would lock unto jets and go into this overly cinematic semi on-rails chase. They could do it to you so you'd have instances where you have to break thier chase. It wasn't perfect and became tedious because it seemed like every enemy craft needed to be defeated this way. But you know it did spice up the gameplay, I kind of wish they just did'nt drop it. It also had a boring Tom Clancy like story and tone and boring Helio missions. Still the production values were just as good as the main games.

As for your concern, I'm not sure what to say. It's going to be a lot of banking left and slowing down to get behind enemies. You can learn pretty cool maneuvers with some jets, but at the end of the day it can feel like your just chasing dots on the screen. Playing with expert controls(AC5 and so on) gives you more control and can feel a bit less arcadey. Still, like I said 5 and 7 have pretty awesome mission design so they will require more thought and attention then "look for the enemy dots". Still looking for those dots can become pretty intense and missions that involve more then dogfights can test your flight abilities.

I would just try 7 right now instead of getting into a deep dive. It really is the team honing in on thier craft that they've developed since AC4. If you can't get into 7 then hey the series is'nt for you.

ah the old "turn and shoot missiles to kill enemy" gameplay aye... you can construct a reductionist statement like this about the win con in any game. are you trying to force this series because it's a popular weeb game, and you must stay in tune with the community?

More like the music is great and visually it looks neat and I like space flight sims and action games. The strangereal stuff seems kinda interesting too and I like radio chatter in games.

Wonder what odds are of them actually not releasing the 5 uprez on regular store. I am kinda interested in this as haven’t really played one in forever, not even 100% what the last one I played was, I really loved the early ones.

Pretty sure I missed 5 so would be a good deal if can get for cheap.

Ace Combat 3 is the only game in the series I own.  It was released during the time when Namco was just on fire with Playstation 1 games and as mentioned, goes for a more futuristic "Ghost In The Shell" theme, with the Japanese version having a shitload of story that was cut out of the American release.  So much content was removed that the game went from two discs to one for the localization.  It also has a great soundtrack- it's like the R4 of the AC series.

Let me know when they release another AC game in this style.  Until then... :zzz.  Will stick with After Burner Climax, which is infinitely more satisfying.

Flight sims, even more arcadey ones like AC, are

I can see that. After Burner was never as satisfying to me for some reason, it didn’t really click. I am not sure why, love the aesthetic and the speed, but idk. I just remember the enemies felt like paper or something and for the same feel preferred traditional 2D shooters like Gradius.

Remember being hype for but wanting to like it more than I did.  :lol

Thinking about picking this up because it'll look gorgeous in my OLED.  :doge

There's a collectors edition also but I'm not sure if the added value is worth it.
I've played a few Ace Combats. Surprisingly enough the 3DS version is one of my favorites which I later learned was a remake of 2.

Just finished it. Pretty good game. Really good missions honestly. I don't think any of the missions ever got very samey. Nor was I ever bored.

Mission 12 was probably a more typical balance between defense and attack style mission. But what made this one more interesting is that you were meant to more defend the ground units. I don't remember excactly what I did as the plane I had that shot a barrage of unguided missiles really would have worked. So I just had to rely on my plane that had about 102 regular guided missiles and just be fast as I could be.

Mission 13 was about aiming correctly so that a satellite guided missile could take out some deeply entrenched bunkers. It was actually hard and I realized I really couldn't use a super fast plane as to much speed would mean I would have trouble lining up for the satellite. And slowing down would mean I would stall. But whatever amount of bunkers you have left when the timer ends means you the same amount of ICBM to chase at the end. Which you kind of need a fast plane to handle. So I chose a kind of balanced fighter.

Mission 14 was cool as it begins with you having to fly through a valley and avoid flying too high and search lights. You then finally attack the base and you have an opportunity to try and do as much damage before the base starts mounting a counter attack. Which is actually pretty cool as you can take out the SAMs, spot lights, and planes before it gets really crazy. Fun mission.

Mission 15 is a typical fun battle over a city and then a cool boss battle.

Mission 16 introduces the seceniro that your enemies and allies can't be identified by command and so you have to get close to them to know. But you also have to protect a vehicle that is making it's way through the city. So it get's pretty cool trying to quickly get a handle on who you should be attacking. This level also looks great as it's a city at night.

Mission 17 I guess is kind of a repeat of 16 and the usual defend before the bombers come, but it's still solid.

Mission 18 was just awesome dogfights.

19 was even more awesome dogfights with a final battle with the giant Arsenal Bird. So the usual fight the big weapon boss these games have been doing.

Mission 20 was kind of like 6's final mission. A boss battle then a careful flying test through a corridor.

All in all the 2nd half of the game was really good.

The sound mixing in this game is pretty good.

I really noticed it during the briefings. In one of the later briefings you're with a whole squad and clearly centered in the middle.  There's people talking around you and holy shit did it feel immersive.

I got this on sale a month or 2 ago, but only picked at it some.  Wanted to try the VR shit (which is pretty toight), but played a campaign mission here and there also.  The game's solid so far, but a stupid part of me wants to wait till either next summer when the Maverick hype hits, or if they announce more VR shit.  Otherwise, it's kinda backlog for the most part.

Fuck mission 6.   Not sure if I like the score tally in a time limit thing.  I try and cycle through and target only the towers, warehouses, oil tanks and the SAMS, but haven't been able to hit that score in time.  I don't know if it's the drones I focus on afterward?  I assumed they offered more points, but still can't beat them in time.
  :rage

Edit: Huh... apparently doing multiplayer matches racks up MRP super quick, even if you lose every match.  Seems that's my issue, is that I just haven't bought all the right gear yet.  I had no idea doing multiplayer or even replaying missions keeps you earning.  :neogaf  I got this shit now.  :jawalrus

:o i didn't know that either svejk. i got this when i borrowed a PS4 and PSVR off a friend. the VR was good, but needed to be a little smoother to avoid the motion sickness. i didn't have enough time with it to finish completely, and definitely got a little stuck in places. mission 12 - stonehenge defence was the gate where i had to "git gud". got up to mission 15 before getting distracted and eventually giving back the ps4. really enjoyed what i played, but i'd generally prefer to just fire up a proper flight sim.

AC inhabits this weird space between sim and arcade. i get it and like it, but i'd also easily pick after burner or il-2 over it. i prefer the dedication to one lane vs. this which while fun, didn't feel like it really excelled at either aspect.

annihilation missions were annoying mainly due to the time limit and counter productive to the fun of AC
basically you just need to stop enjoying and think about optimizing, where to start and where to go and when, as well as loadout and most efficient resupply

Wow... Either the the difficulty spike is way too drastic and requires a ton of grinding, or I just suck.  About 4-5 times I got to around 15000 points of the 17000 for mission 6, but either run out of time, payload runs out, or I die.   I thought the A-10 would make it an easy victory after getting the 4 lock bomb, but the payload amount isn't enough and the aerial combat with it is a no go.  I played a about 5-6 MP matches (and of course got destroyed) and racked up enough munz to get the F-18.  It seems to do much better in the manuverability department.  Plus the payload seems to be able to expand further with more available upgrades.   Seems I just need to keep grinding to get better gear.   Didn't expect an AC game to have grinding.
Oh and for the record, the "checkpoint" on that mission is fucking stupid and non-existent.  Seems only obvious that the checkpoint would be when the drones show up with it's cut scene, but no... The checkpoint is starting the whole mission over again.  Lolwutfuckyou

worst comes to worst, drop down the difficulty
otherwise, A10 isn't that hot, speed tends to be very important

the starting or first plane or 2 you can get is pretty good and can work fine, try air-to-ground loadouts to bombard a base, zip back to return line while close, then zip to another location
honestly these missions end up a bit trial-and-error as you optimize your flight path and hope for some luck

Any tips for the mission with the sand storm?

First I have to bomb an oil field. GET THE OIL.
I just pummel it with UGL's from my A10 which works good enough.

But then of course the twist. Saddams' trucks are getting away with the OIL so I have to bomb those too but of course UGL's are not great against trucks not to mention the sandstorm raging, which makes the targets blip.
Destroying a bunch of those trucks is doable but for the final twist a bunch of UAV's arrive. I always run out of time chasing down the last 2 trucks or so if I hunt the UAV's first or I get shot down by the UAV's because I rush to the remaining trucks.

I'm pretty good at dog fighting but my ground combat skills are a bit lacking.

I ended up still using the F-18 still... and use the cluster ground missile iirc.  The F-18 can still cruise at low speed and altitude as the A-10 when it needs to.

The quickest way to rack up some currency is doing a few multiplayer matches.  Even if you're dead last, you still get a good load for just 4-10 minutes worth of dog fighting.

I still need to finish the campaign, but keep putting it to the side.  I've been playing a lot of multiplayer lately though.  Just jump in on occasion to grab some MRP.  I think I was being silly and wanting to wait and get pumped after seeing Top Gun 2, but since that got pushed a year...  :doge  I'll probably just up and finish the campaign when I'm done with Tsushima now.

Project Wingman came out today on Steam. It's like an indie rotoscoping of Ace Combat.

I finally bit and bought it. I tried the first mission. I gotta admit I'm a little lost and it's very floaty (which I suppose is intentional).
