Because memes are the new "drug dealers are giving out free LCD to your kids and telling them it's candy" that parents are being told to be scared of.

My wife is freaking out about this.

It is scary, even though it’s bullshit. But there is a bunch of inappropriate shot on YouTube which makes it believable.

That said, parents believed that people were going around giving kids stamps with LSD on them in the 80s, and now that I’m an adult I’m like “what kind of dumbass is going to give free drugs to random 6 year olds?” Like it’s the dumbest possible crime

If you let young kids browse youtube by their own you already failed as a parent, there really is so much shit there like peppa the pig murdering people etc they will inevitably ending up on due to the algorithms.

I actually think that the algorithms in kids YouTube do pretty well.

I’ve watched a mad amount of that with my kid and never saw anything unintended. There might be some marginal YouTube celebrity type Minecraft videos mostly where the dues are being purses but not really violent are inappropriate.

It seems to me the most obvious fix though, is for YouTube to lock the kids content to specific creators and channels that have higher scrutiny, preapproval of videos, or videos that only get loaded onto the kids side after a certain number of views. I guarantee all the inappropriate shit is going to be on low follower count channels or clearly labeled for adults.

I'm fundamentally against platform driven curation to be honest, platforms need to make tools available for users to curate their space and leave everything else alone unless illegal.

Well you clearly dont have children because aint nobody got time curating content for them Momo.

But the great thing is, there is already services with curated content so I dont have to bother with YouTube

You should be able to opt into platform curation as well, this is part of what I see as user tools. I am against it being a default and or inescapable reality.

Idk if u are joking or not, if so horrible of course.

That said of a kid kills themselves over something a meme said there is a lot more going on obviously. Like normal kids wont kill themselves. This kid should have prob been under psychiatric surveillance or something for a long time.

Like I was 10 when MK2 came out but I never killed anyone and dont know anyone that did, normal people can consume some abnormal media and live fine.

If by 12 your kid doesn't know the difference between the media world and the real world something is fucked up.

You may want to contact Snopes and let them know you've found an actual legitimate suicide that can be directly linked to Momo

At first they thought it was because of some fortnite challenge which I was skeptical about. It turns out it was more related to this. I'm just going by what my wife tells me. The school district is robocalling parents with information on this stuff.

The boy has a younger sibling in the same school so everyone still sees the mom every now and then. I couldn't imagine.

Uncle: It's not my place to get involved.

Did the kid have a history of mental illness or being bullied or something?

Not to my knowledge, but there are always kids with fucked up backgrounds and shitty parents. It's depressing.
