General Science + Tech Talk Thread - Direct Energy Weapons
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:21:56 AM »
I didnt know where to post this so I looked for a general tech thread and was surprised to see we dont really have one, so i'm starting one. Thread is for general stuff from programming to protocols to crappy gadgets to giant science lasers.

I don't have anything specific to add. I just want to say that choosing a monitor is a fucking nightmare.

I want to write a generic script that compresses and passphrases files at rest before I do an offsite backup, gpg is too slow so im just giving up on it, it doesnt need to be super secure as my transport tunnel is secure, my server is secure (lel) etc and I write (and soon destroy) them at a rate where if you get a few it's a fraction of a fraction of a useful thing anyway but it would make me feel better about this. tips?

German engineering. :rejoice

Its probably because sensors failed in like 0,1% of their tests and they go for the conservative and safe option.

Google fell afoul of antitrust rules by stopping online publishers from placing competitors' adverts on their search results pages, forcing them to reserve the most valuable space on their page for Adsense results and a requirement to ask for Google's permission before changing how rival ads are displayed.

yeah i generally use tar, what was throwing me is the compression speeds, im thinking of moving things into a 'slow folder' while crypting but i dont think it would keep up. I havent tried your tools yet as its a national holiday here so im just going dick around today haha

Cindi did you try Rooibos? It's excellent tea (decaf) from South Africa. Kinda honey-ish taste but it's so good once in a while.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx smashes Intel Core i5 in new PCMark10 benchmarks
The stuff happening with arm, especially in mobile, is like flashing back to the early 90s when everything was outdated in 3 years.

I wonder when Apple will jump over.

US Navy patents anti-gravity spacecraft

Military inventors filed plans for a highly unusual flying machine which uses an ‘inertial mass reduction device’ to travel at ‘extreme speeds’.

What that means is that the aircraft uses complex technology to reduce its mass and thereby lessen inertia (an object’s resistance to motion) so it can zoom along at high velocities.

The patent is highly complex and describes methods of reducing the mass of an aircraft using various techniques including the generation of gravity waves, which were first detected in 2016 after being produced when two black holes collided.

‘It is possible to reduce the inertial mass and hence the gravitational mass, of a system/object in motion, by an abrupt perturbation of the non-linear background of local spacetime,’ the patent says.

The craft described in the patent features a cavity wall filled with gas, which is then made to vibrate using powerful electromagnetic waves. This then creates a vacuum around the craft, allowing it to propel itself at high speeds.

The UFO-style ship can be used in water, air or even space.

The cause of this outage was deployment of a single misconfigured rule within the Cloudflare Web Application Firewall (WAF) during a routine deployment of new Cloudflare WAF Managed rules.

The intent of these new rules was to improve the blocking of inline JavaScript that is used in attacks. These rules were being deployed in a simulated mode where issues are identified and logged by the new rule but no customer traffic is actually blocked so that we can measure false positive rates and ensure that the new rules do not cause problems when they are deployed into full production.

Unfortunately, one of these rules contained a regular expression that caused CPU to spike to 100% on our machines worldwide. This 100% CPU spike caused the 502 errors that our customers saw.

we parsing javascript with regular expressions at cloudflare? :heh
