Good question. And it kinda bothers me. These can be compelling characters, but when I see people rally behind them it just reminds me that there are people who really, genuinely believe these things, that they may not be larping their support for funsies, that they might actually think it. And it's also like, I guess personally speaking but I'm already weighed down thinking about the state of the world daily, hearing new horrible things all the time, perpetually depressed, like I engage in fiction in part to get away from that. So when I see people larping support for abhorrent characters, I don't know. It just weighs on me, puts me in a bad head space.Like the characters themselves are fine/interesting, but seeing people advocate for genocide or other atrocities just kinda messes with me.
problem isn't as much creating "complex" bad guys, it's creating bad guys who's ideology isn't countered by the good guys. If your good guys can't make an argument to the audience that justifies why the bad guys basic ideals are illogical and fascistic, then your audience comes away rooting for the bad guy. It seems like bad guys are given the time to spouse ideology/philosophical musings to be contemplative of the bad ideas, but good guys are only there to knock the bad guys down because their ideology involves killing billions. If the good guys are able to logically defame the philosophy and then beat the shit out of the bad guy I think that's better. Apparently we have to appeal to "logic" and not "emotions" for audiences to understand.
