A-fucking-men. After the shit Druckman had Ellie endure in the first game (not to mention killing a queer girl of color), anything other than Ellie having a positive relationship with another woman and both of them living in the end is unacceptable.

If Druckman is a good ally at all, he is not going to pull this shit.

I refuse to see this as an actual LGBT problem. This is some shipping level bullshit where people get mad when their favorite characters don't hook up.
pretty much. i also don't get the whining about "misdirection"; are hordes of alt-right incels rushing to preorder the game because a lesbian dies in the trailer?

"Misdirection" sounds like preemptively deflecting any self reflection in case the final game proves all or part of the concerns and assumptions wrong, really.

Is disproportionately killing off gay/lesbian characters in fiction even a thing?

I know, if it’s on tvtropes it must be true and I try to be better.

My suspicion is that people who are eager for representation just focus more on the gay characters and will then notice more if one of them gets killed. Like this post:

Quote
There are 4 gay characters that we've been introduced to in The Last of Us series.
Ellie, Riley, Bill and Dina.

Riley is dead.
Bill has a dead partner and is all alone.
Ellie has a dead girlfriend
and now potentially a second dead girlfriend.

Even if you don't care for the bury your gays trope its really boring and its annoying and disheartening to see them use it for all of their gay characters.

Oh boy, that looks bad until you look at who else died in the game

Quote
Because you're looking at it specfically as if they're just going out to kill gay characters rather than the simple fact that, gay or straight, a lot of characters in this series are dead. Anna, Tess, Sam, Sarah, Henry etc. They're all dead. Gay characters aren't treated any differently in this series than straight characters. Yet your post, and some others, make it seem like they're deliberately targeting gay characters for suffering.

I guess it's like the "black guy dies first" : there's a perception and certainly enough possible examples that you can't dismiss out of hand the pattern. I always thought the lesson of all those ("Bury your gays" Women in fridges" etc) was that writers should ideally be mindful of tokenism and using female or minority characters as just props.

I'm not a Last of Us expert but one thing I'll give to the critics is that having Ellie losing a second time her love interest might veer into lazy, unintended comical writing. This can be part of a larger discussion about having the character returns at all.

Yeah can just imagine the comments of objectification and sexualization of lesbians if the end scene of TLOU2 is Ellie getting finger blasted by her lover.

The mostly male posters in the no  sexy women allowed thread would explode, not in their pants either.

This reminds of a Neo GAF throw back.

Remember that “ask a real woman” thread? And like, the women that pledged to answer questions are that thirst trap Asian chick (backstreet bunny or something like that) and like excelsiorlief.

See the problem is that even if ND are pulling the ol', "Fooled 'ya!" misdirection trick, they're doing it on the backs of an already marginalized group.

That's incredibly tone deaf no matter how the game actually plays out.

All we have is the trailer and in the trailer they iced the queer character. Again.

ND saying, "Just kidding, folks!" doesn't change the fact that they still led an audience along with a tired-ass toxic trope.

Poor form, imo.

Not if they acknowledge it as a recurring thematical element for the character.
Paranoia for the "everyone i love dies" thing, was already an established character trait for her in LoU1.

Seriously though, why is there such panic over Joker? It almost reads like parodies of 80s and 90s moms worried about any kind of problematic media turning people into murderers.

Is it actual concern trolling? I'm legitimately confused here. The reason can't be that Joker is sympathetic in this movie, because we had people sympathizing with and idolizing Health Ledger's Joker who is 100% unsympathetic. Nobody was in a panic because people were meme'ing about Thanos or Killmonger being right, so what is it about this movie that's worked these dopes into a froth?

Joel's daughter dies in his arms in the opening minutes of the first game. But sure ERA, ND have a thing for killing off gay characters or their loved ones. In a post apocalyptic setting where everybody gay or straight can die at any point because that's kind of the deal when it's a post apocalyptic setting.

I think some people are eager to be vindicated, at this point in time, that incels (and white supremacy, alt right, Russian pierogis etc) are openly embraced by the (Mass Entertainment) Powers That Be. The character is white, male, is already a bit controversial and been appropriated by morons and the film is positioned as more mature and morally gray.

2020 is almost upon us and brings with it the dawn of a new generation. We already know Halo Infinite is confirmed for Xbox Scarlett and probably Horizon 2 & Ghosts of Tsushima for Sony.

Then, there are the dark horses : Diablo 4, Zelda: BOTW2, Starfield or BGAE2 . I expect atleast 2 of these in 2020 or early 2021.

So, which game do you think will win THE GOTY 2020?

Be Druckman.

Craft a world of believable apocalypse where society can't be rebuilt and people are worse than the issue at hand.

Create LGBT character without needing to rub your face on the fact. Make her strong yet weak as the child she was after all.

Create a parent complex struggle with the whole train derail philosophical problem

Take that away so she goes back to that previous life.

The ONLY way they can be vindicated though is if some incel (who ERA has already determined is a violent domestic terror group) decides to shoot up something and specifically references this new Joker movie as their inspiration.

Otherwise, they sound like an 80s Irish Catholic woman bemoaning the widespread use of condoms.

They just can't win...

What it boils down to is that either:

a) ND pulled a fakeout with the trailer, leading us gays to *think* we were going to have to witness one of the most harmful and upsetting tropes about us in fiction (and it would probably be held up as incredible storytelling by the cishets, lbr), then going "haha! fooled you! can't believe you gays were so dumb as to believe we were gonna fridge Ellie's girlfriend!" which is shitty. I've seen people equate it to someone raising their hand like they're going to slap you then laughing at you for flinching. That's legitimately how it feels.

or

b) they are actually going to kill Dina, in which case, fuck Neil Druckmann

But their last game was starred by two (very strong) women of color

-Doesn't matter, they killed a PoC we know nothing about aside from one conversation in our perceived take on the trailer.

It's funny that they want diversity to literally affect the storytelling and are like proud of it. Who cares if this fits the world the game creates, naughty dog needs to respect my fan fiction or they're bigots

We don't want devs to shoehorn anything in! What are you talking about?

I thought even TV Tropes stopped with the bitching about gay shipping some years ago. Feels like some people can just not let go.

The Last of Us murders a child in the opening sequence... I really don't know what anyone expected other than more manipulative storytelling.

Yes but you fail to see the important details, such as being white and not kissing another girl.

Never encountered this but it would be pretty well in line with the overstepping that you sometimes see with folks who are looking to ingratiate themselves in to minority groups.

That's not how it works. Being an ally does not make you part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

You want to be ally? FUCK OFF
