My suspicion is that people who are eager for representation just focus more on the gay characters and will then notice more if one of them gets killed. Like this post:

There are 4 gay characters that we've been introduced to in The Last of Us series.
Ellie, Riley, Bill and Dina.

Riley is dead.
Bill has a dead partner and is all alone.
Ellie has a dead girlfriend
and now potentially a second dead girlfriend.

Even if you don't care for the bury your gays trope its really boring and its annoying and disheartening to see them use it for all of their gay characters.

Because you're looking at it specfically as if they're just going out to kill gay characters rather than the simple fact that, gay or straight, a lot of characters in this series are dead. Anna, Tess, Sam, Sarah, Henry etc. They're all dead. Gay characters aren't treated any differently in this series than straight characters. Yet your post, and some others, make it seem like they're deliberately targeting gay characters for suffering.

I always thought the lesson of all those ("Bury your gays" Women in fridges" etc) was that writers should ideally be mindful of tokenism and using female or minority characters as just props.

I'm not a Last of Us expert but one thing I'll give to the critics is that having Ellie losing a second time her love interest might veer into lazy, unintended comical writing. This can be part of a larger discussion about having the character returns at all.

See the problem is that even if ND are pulling the ol', "Fooled 'ya!" misdirection trick, they're doing it on the backs of an already marginalized group.

That's incredibly tone deaf no matter how the game actually plays out.

All we have is the trailer and in the trailer they iced the queer character. Again.

ND saying, "Just kidding, folks!" doesn't change the fact that they still led an audience along with a tired-ass toxic trope.

H1 2020 is proving to be even crazier with TLOU2, Ori 2, Cyberpunk, SE's Avengers, FFVII Remake, Minecraft Dungeons, Animal Crossing, Nioh 2, Rainbow Six Quarantine all just in H1.

Then, there are the dark horses : Diablo 4, Zelda: BOTW2, Starfield or BGAE2 . I expect atleast 2 of these in 2020 or early 2021.

Craft a world of believable apocalypse where society can't be rebuilt and people are worse than the issue at hand.

Create LGBT character without needing to rub your face on the fact. Make her strong yet weak as the child she was after all.

Create a parent complex struggle with the whole train derail philosophical problem

Make said aggressive kid transition to adulthood in a cozy environment, keeping her safe from her instincts.

Take that away so she goes back to that previous life.
