^ Either that

or Forbidden Planet   (Them! is one of my personal favourite movies, but I don't really see it as a sci-fi.)

In terms of worst scifi movie, which is what the poll seems to be about, hmm probably... Battlefield Earth or The Phantom Menace...

2001 is without equal for philosophical Sci-fi.

Star Trek IV or VI for hopeful, positive Sci-fi.

The matrix for mind bending Sci-fi.

Depends on the type of Sci-fi.

Dune's a mess but it's got some great ideas and it's heart is in the right place which a lot of scifi movies are guilty of. Even some of the best/better ones.

Fifth Element one of my favorite movies, not just science fiction. Always cheers me up too, great happy ending movie that doesn't feel undeserved or super cheesey. One of those movies where everything hits just right, and nothing overstays its welcome.

On rewatch it really feels like it's one of those movies that just could not work at any other point in time with any other crew or cast members. A lot of weirdness and goofy shit, a big bad we never see and an antagonist that never actually directly interacts with the protagonists. Great movie.

100% agree. It was late 90s at its very best. That carefree, slightly goofy epic just doesn't exist after The Matrix (to pick an arbitrary but important milestone).

Goofy scifi just can't work in our post-911 world.

I found the goofy thing odd as Whedonism-Abramsism is the dominant ideology of our era and it demands corny jokes and quips out the butthole ???

The only srs business scifi movie i recall seeing in years was Blade Runner :yeshrug

Some others: Prometheus, Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow. This year we have Gemini Man coming out.

Watching the twist happen as an American made me rofl so goddamn hard. Like this is what some idiot thought was a scandal or how the world worked :lol

To be fair the season of House of Cards before Trump had a similar """scandal""" that ousted the sitting President so Kevin Spacey could take over. Some shit like "2% of your investments are controlled by Chinese influences. [pause for gasps]"  :lol

Year and a half later we got a Prez bragging about grabbing pussies.

Harry Potter and stuff. Fantasy became more urban/modern fantasy after the 90’s to catch up. To be fair, the most popular show this decade was fantasy.

In Mission Impossible Fallout there is a scene where the President has to sign off on something and the CIA/IMF people are all acting like that is a big deal because he's on the line.
The entire audience in the cinema looked at eachother in silence thinking: "Yup, that sort of scene is totally ruined forever now"

Esch nailed it. If Robocop counts, that too.

Stalker is my perfect sci-fi.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is one of my least favourite, offensively bad sci-fis. One of the most disappointing dumpster fire shit shows i've seen. Made me especially mad because it looked great and had some great scenes and ideas, but i couldn't stand the pure naive indigenous peoples premise and though it was completely off the wall bonkers at times which I'm definitely into, the script was so incredibly bad it continually destroyed my enjoyment of the film. Felt bad for Dane Dehaan, takes the cake for most unlikeable lead in a long time.

I don't even think Valerian is bad, it's just boring...flat. Uncharismatic leads, action you don't care about and feels weak etc. Bland with a big budget.

Eh, i hadn't cringed that hard in a movie for a while. I'm not as into The Fifth Element as many it seems, but i dig it and was really anticipating it as Luc Bessons last big hurrah and the biggest indie movie of all time (budget wise)

Something of Boris, now there's a movie I haven't thought about in a long time, and I still don't understand it, other than it literally seems like they thought they had enough of an idea for a second movie, found out they didn't and then shot it anyway, then padded out the other 60 minutes with scripted on set action scenes

at least we got this out of the whole affair which is still canon imo:
