I watched Full Metal Jacket last night. Such an outstanding film. I love the duality between parts 1 and 2 (hell I guess I could consider there to be 3 parts), how the story was delivered, and I want to know everyone's thoughts on it.
I'm pretty sure some here don't particularly care for part 2 and 3 because they don't really expand fully upon part 1 at the island. The story telling is much more subtle, and it definitely seems to be the type of movie that only gets better with age and rewatching the story.
The one stand out for me is that Joker, the main character, seemed to be one of the few people in the movie that managed to keep his humanity through the dehumanizing process that was military boot camp. The guy constantly makes jokes, wise cracks, and sarcastic remarks, but you know he feels the other way. Two contradictions made through the movie in the span of minutes: "I wanna get in the shit! I haven't heard gun fire in weeks!", fast forward 5 minutes later and Joker's muttering,"They've gotta be shitting me. I'm not ready for this shit!" when they became under attack.
"The duality of man, that Jungian thing."
I found the character of Joker to be extremely deep and complex. And my central motivation for enjoying the film as much as I did, next to the entirety of the genius effort made into the boot camp section.
I found this film to be utter brilliance, and I plan on watch the rest of Kubrick's films asap. FMJ amazing pacing, which was only enhanced further through brilliant dialogue and camera work.
Boom-boom long time!
