Platoon is a very disturbing movie. Out of all the Vietnam movies I've seen it seems to show the horrors of that war better than any other. Although the movie definitely has flaws it's classic. Some of the scenes are just amazing.

Also I love the Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump. It really brought out Gump's character - as well as people's reaction to him - better than most stuff in the movie.

btw what's the name of that movie with Sean Penn and Michael J Fox? I saw some of it on AMC last week and it was very disturbing, almost to an over the top point. Which is ironic considering that war was over the top in every way

It's on AMC twice next week. I never seen it though.

I like a lot of the scenes that were cut from the theatrical release individually, but as a part of the whole they don't work. All Redux manages to accomplish is to make Willard seem like more of a nice, sensible guy instead of someone who is on edge and and slipping into insanity, which kills a lot of the tension.

Deer Hunter was more about Russian Roulette and living in Pennsylvania than it was about Vietnam. And the best part of Apocalypse Now was the Hearts of Darkness documentary that came out of it.

Platoon felt authentic as long as you ignore the Sgt. Barnes vs Sgt. Elias thing and the basic training part of Full Metal Jacket was spot on.
