How can you have FF VIII in your good list when this 'remastered' version barely looks any different to the original. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if 'remastered' really just means, made to work with new hardware. That's basically what it looks like to me. They didn't even bother to fix the aspect ratio. And FFVIII basically has a broken battle system and a fucking annoying 'draw' system where you have to continually draw your magic from certain places. If ever there needed to be a complete overhaul of a battle system, that would be it.

Yet a complete remake of FFVII that looks graphically phenomenal at least, is in your trash list.

It amazes me how low the standards of easily impressed FF fans are though. :delicious

Five years, one part, only Midgar a section of the original game that lasts 5 hours.

Looks amazing! /s Can't wait to shell out 60 dollars for 10% of a games story that took 5 years to make based on a 20 year old game :lol

Because FFVII is a new FF game.

...That's taken them a goddamn generation.

Just like vs13/15 did a generation before it.

At this point, a remaster of 8 (which seems to be putting more polygons and better textures on the models) will come out faster than 7's remake, which is royally sad for Square-soft.

Though I am sure it follows a similar path, they also made it clear that it is not exactly the same story. The midgar section will have content that was not in the original. And they also stated that it will fill two blu-ray discs. Although, that isn't necessarily a big indicator of the size since you could fill up a blu-ray disc with audio and cut scenes alone.

the fact they turned it into a supposedly (emphasis) full length game is hilarious. What is full length here? 20 hours? 40 hours?

10 hours? :doge

Lap it up. Should the Midgar section last 40 hours anyways? Like, what really could be expanded that much? Much like the boss fight against the scorpion that lasted 10 hours, the remake sounds like it's hilarious drawn out. Or maybe hilariously short and lacking content.

Either way...pass.

5 years for a high quality and high production value JRPG seems about right....3-5 years is whats taken about any other big JRPG/WRPG. You people get fixated on the "only on Midgar" thing and have no idea what that means. Like it's going to be an exact copy of the 4 hour portion of the game from 1997. They have said each game is about the production level of XIII. That would mean each part(of which is only 2 which is good news) is basically a mainline FF game in itself.

Sad for Square? How. They also released DQXI,FFXIV expansions, KH3, FFXV/DLC and plenty of other games this gen. Remaking FFVII was always going to be a huge endeavor and now it for sure dosen't look at all that poorly handled.

Except it's not a full length JRPG, it's seemingly a chopped and padded section of one.

It remains to be seen what square do when making a next gen JRPG as FFXV was a mess and FFXIII was a linear game, but I'm not exactly enthusiastic. If this game comes out and it's a lit long as fuck interesting RPG I'll eat my words but I doubt it.

And if it takes them 5 years they need to reconsider how they're developing these games. I don't expect 1-2 year turnarounds like the ps1 days but 5 years is insane.

I don't know. I kind of like the idea of a fully realised Midgar that you could explore. No indication as to whether that will be the case at this point, but imagine if there is a full city to explore, with side missions and everything. I kind of would like to learn more about Midgar actually. I mean, once you left Midgar in the original, that was it. You could never return again. And I remember kind of wanting to in the original, so...

Time to take out the Final Fantasy stan fact book.

The last announced new mainline FF, if you don't count XV, which was a revamped Versus, was FFXIV. FFXIV was announced in 2009 if memory serves.

Essentially it has been ten years since the last mainline FF was announced. Not including spin offs.

Except for the great and ever improving XIV.

The disjointed, but still interesting and fresh XV.

The great ports of XII.

And now the fantastic looking remake of VII.

Also XIII is a good game.

FFVII Remake Part 1 being only Midgar makes it a hard pass for me.

My favorite moments came way after the Midgar portion of the game. Tons of neat and fun stories that aren't being told in part 1. Zero hype for FFVII and whatever SE does.

Don't think they're publishing anything inherently bad tho.

FF7R - well, the characters look great, the battle system looks a lot more responsive and dynamic than FF15's, and I appreciate you can pause to select through menu-based commands when the meter fills. But I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that boss fight dragged on a bit too long.
FFVIII - far from my favorite FF but I'd rather play this than a lot of what else was shown
Octopath on PC - awesome game but was hoping for a new announcement
Brave Exvius FFT crossover - not into mobile, so meh
DQ Builders 2 - yessss
DQ11 Switch - gonna replay this one in 2D, the original DQ11 was my GOTY last year of course
SaGa collection - FUCK YES.
FF14 Stormbringers - I wish I cared about FF14, music was excellent though
Life Is Strange 2 - The first one kept me entertained, even if the twee indie stuff was a bit too on the nose. Didn't play any of the released chapters of the second game, but I guess there's no time travel in this one? Instead the characters have a Force like ability? Meh.
WWII shooter - LOL, because we don't have enough of those.
Oninaki - Looks a bit more inspired than Setsuna/Lost Sphear at least. Will wait and see...
Car Racing Game - Looks like something you saw on XBLA during the early years of the 360.
Zombie Game - Looks like Mirror's Edge with zombies in Eastern Europe. Meh.
Avengers - Seems the rumors are true and it's gonna be an online co-op thing. Meh, not a fan of the GAAS/online co-op/lootbox type game.

Also, where was Star Ocean 1R? :(

Dragon Quest XI-2013-2017. About 4 years. Announced in 2015
Persona 5-2011-2016-5 years.
Mass Effect A-2012-2017-6 Years
Witcher 3-2011-2015-3.5 years
Kingdom Hearts 3-2013-2019-6 years
Dragon Age I-2011-2014-3 Years
Horizon-2011-2017-6 Years
Nier 2-2014-2017-3 years
Valkyria Chronicles 4 2015-2018-Sounds like about 3 years

Insane times.

Because obviously this development time is just for the first part and not the project as a whole.

:obama

What is dead may never die.

Truly.

Let's see...

Strike - FF13

I skipped FF13-2, and 13 LR, barely played 14

Ball - 13-2
Ball - 13 LR

Strike - FF15

the count is 2-2. FFVIIR is nigh on becoming a strike.

After FFXIII I've given them a three strikes system. I've been waiting for a hit - a grounder, never mind a homerun - for ten years.

I'm still not sure if I should FFVIIR a strike or a ball. I'm leaning on strike. Once they hit three I'm out. There's no need to continue disappointing myself and existing in an abusive relationship.

And if it takes them 5 years they need to reconsider how they're developing these games. I don't expect 1-2 year turnarounds like the ps1 days but 5 years is insane.

Dragon Quest XI-2013-2017. About 4 years. Announced in 2015
Persona 5-2011-2016-5 years.
Mass Effect A-2012-2017-6 Years
Witcher 3-2011-2015-3.5 years
Kingdom Hearts 3-2013-2019-6 years
Dragon Age I-2011-2014-3 Years
Horizon-2011-2017-6 Years
Nier 2-2014-2017-3 years
Valkyria Chronicles 4 2015-2018-Sounds like about 3 years

Insane times.

Because obviously this development time is just for the first part and not the project as a whole.

Except it's not a full length JRPG, it's seemingly a chopped and padded section of one.
You don't know that.

1) Atlus is/was way fucking smaller than Square-Enix/Square studios.
2) A few of these are development hell-ish (CDProjectRed and Witcher/Cyberpunk: Notable) which is valid for the development times.
3) That still doesn't excuse the fact that Square-Enix is a huge company with studios all over the world AND still can't fucking get part-one of FF7 out within the goddamn year after 5 years.

Please cope harder.

XIII-2 is trash and not at all an improvement.  A terrible version of the battle system, a somehow more nonsense continuation that dosen't make sense with the story, and a shitty monster mechanic make for a worse game. XIII is a good game. I don't really care what you think about it.

RE2 Remake which is a much smaller scale game also took 4 years so how thats a good comparison I'm not sure. VII Remake is coming out this generation....it comes out in March.

And clearly the series hasn't died since it continues to sell well and is popular. XV is liked. XIV is liked. VII Remake will probably be liked. Jaded fucks don't matter. Go play your DQ games and old ports.

I'd totally jump in once it comes out on Xbone.

Looks like PSO2 is coming first, hope FFXIV shows up sometime soon.

Except for the great and ever improving XIV.

MMO. :paul :trash :paul :paul

So :trash they had to spend millions to revamp it into a theme-park and hope people would sub.

The disjointed, but still interesting and fresh XV.

The great ports of XII.

...Because that's the only good FF post PSX era. But let's slide on that and give you this one if only because I paid for the PC version to have the Japanese International Version (+ mods) finally in the West/English.

Quote
And now the fantastic looking remake of VII.

Which was :trash compared to 8 and 9 of the PSX era and still is :trash here because it's taking fucking forever.

Fucking Biohazard 2, which came out in the same goddamn era came out this generation. FF7:Remake ain't.

Square: :trash :paul :trash :paul :trash :paul

Also XIII is a good game.

Except it isn't. It's a tube of hold forward for 40 hours until you get a 20 respite.

FFXIII-2: A slight improvement but still :trash if only because the time-travel story makes no lick of sense.

The series never died.

Only for distinguished mentally-challenged fellows. For people with brains: Square has been dead since 2012.

Yeah. FFXIII was basically follow the yellow brick road for three quarters of the way through, and then weirdly opening up right at the end. It was also one huge fucking tutorial where it drip fed you the battle system in steps and didn't allow you full access to it until the very end.

Correction: FF13 opens up and then closes back up the second you leave Pulse.

don't you play eso timu?

i really need to keep playing FFXV so i can have opinions. at least FFVII:R's character design isn't as atrocious as XV's. similar to the reason i couldn't play XIII-2, serah is fucking embarrassing character design.

:donot

Final Fantasy has been dead since 13, hon.

You should at least give XIII-2 a chance, Cindi. It's by far the best of the XIII trilogy, and is entertaining, even if the storyline makes barely any sense. I like the Noel/Serah dynamic and the fact the game has slightly more exploration and variety than running down hallways and raised bridges for 40 hours.

Lightning Returns is a clusterfuck of a game but at least the devs tried to do something interesting with it, and you might like the combat which has faint VP elements to it.

If anything, the music in all of the XIII games is awesome.

The sequels sort of fix this but 1) their stories are dook and 2) I couldn't really care after putting in 80-160 hours into 13-1 and 2 to bother with 3 (which jettison'd the terrible combat system of the other two for whatever the fuck it was doing)

:badass

Yes (casually because of no fee). But I can freely admit it's :trash like FF14 and FF11. I will give 11 and 14 props for being "decent" for an MMO, but in a traditionally single-player series? They're :trash and double :trash for not offering a FF12 mode for those of us that would suffer through their grind for the story.

MMO's are generally a shit genre because there's too much focus on shitty combat instead of the adventuring aspects that could make said shitty combat better.

Edit: But really, where is the lie?

Square is a company of what... 500,000+ employees? What the fuck have they been doing over these past five years to where they don't have SOMETHING out at this point for this remake beyond a bunch of CG trailers?

Smaller companies like Capcom have done a "remake" of a same generation title within 4 years AND released the fucking thing.

Modern Square is a mess.
