Futurists (LOL)
« on: July 25, 2019, 03:55:16 PM »
I can't think of any more hilarious made-up career than futurist.  I'm sure there are many smart people who can make good predictions, but I'd rather those predictions come from people with some sort of expertise in a domain. Could be transportation, geopolitics engineering, software development, even fiction writing a la Arthur C. Clarke, who held proven careers in science and engineering.

Are there any decent futurists out there?

Boccioni & Balla are a good starting point.

Around the turn of the decade I took a course called Digital Cinema or something and the prof was all into groundbreaking media tech and confidently assured us that the movies of the future would be 3d and 60 fps. She also made us sign up for Google Plus.

I blame Wired magazine (circa 1995-2001). It almost became like a bible for certain people.

Would Nick Land be considered a futurist?

If nothing else, the idea of futurists resulted in a really great short novel called "NORMAL" by Warren Ellis, so we've got that going for us.

Somebody poured ooze on a stack of Wired magazines and that is how Elon Musk was born.

That book I read, Valley of Genius, certainly seemed to indicate to me that people involved in creating and those most obsessed with Wired would rank it above The Bible in terms of impact on human history.
