Is PSVR worth getting or should I just wait for next gen?
« on: August 21, 2019, 08:07:30 AM »
As the gen comes to end I want some novelty and PSVR seems like a good way to get that. However, Sony has already confirmed the PS5 will have PS4 BC and support VR, including getting a next-generation headset.

Should I just wait, brehs?

Would wait and see what kind of support VR has.  If nothing else, should the PS4 headsets be compatible with PS5, the price should drop by then.

I've decided to wait for the same reason, especially since I don't own a PS4 Pro. If they don't announce a new system then I'll probably buy a PSVR together with the PS5.

I read on some Reddit that the PSVR in its current model can actually dish out much better visuals (technically next gen), and it's only the PS4 and Pro holding it back.  Anybody know if this is true?

Each eye in psvr is basically 1080p resolution cut in half (960x1080)

So the resolution of the screen is worse than on an oculus rift or HTC. Having played a fair number of psvr titles though, I would not say that the resolution was that big of a deal to me. I’m not sure how many games run in native resolution for those screens, but I’m sure that a more powerful system would be able to maintain frame rates at full 1080p with more effects going on so in that sense it’s probably correct.

The games are still immersive, and things have a presence that makes it so (at least for me) I didn’t notice the resolution too often, especially if things are in motion.

Bigger problem is with complexity of the experiences. A lot of what I played was really simple or limited.... but even some of the simple ones are still quite fun.

Ace combat 7 VR is really fun. Had to sit down when playing it, the sense of depth from the sky made me super dizzy.

That seems reasonable. The headset supports 120 Hz and most PSVR games provide fewer (60 or 90) images per second.

The more interesting question is if PS4 PSVR games will get an automatic performance boost from running on a PS5 or if the developers have to release a new version for it.

I think it was worth getting, which is why I bought it. At launch.
However, I wouldn't buy it now unless it's confirmed to be compatible with PS5. Has it been confirmed?
And it would need to be cheap.

While PS5 is most likely launching in November 2020, there has been no announcement regarding PSVR 2, so it could be several years away.

I think it all depends on whether you have enough money to waste.

Yes. And games might run better on PS5. PS5 VR will be using the existing VR for a few years until the new one is out.

I'm not sure what they cost in your country, but the Japanese one I picked up used for about US$200 has been a heap of fun.

I'd be very ok with PSVR2 not come out necessarily at PS5 launch, as long as it is indeed compatible with the current PSVR.  A greater FOV would be really nice though.  Otherwise,  I'm having blast with mine.  No Man's Sky is currently blowing my mind.

I'd wait, the wire setup on the version one is so annoying hopefully they do something wireless with V2

The wire thing is a pain, yes...  As a matter of fact, it's usually the main reason I avoid playing it...  it's not that I don't have fun games I want to play, it's the "setting up" that's tedious.  I have mine in a case, so getting the case out, wipe the lenses, unraveling the cord properly without twisting it, plugging it up to the box behind my tv, move my gaming chair in the proper place, clear the area, fix my hair to where I can wear it comfortably (lol).

I think if you can get a good price on a decent (read: Move controls included) bundle PSVR is definitely worth it, although I have never tried it on a non-pro. There are enough good to great games that go on sale frequently enough to justify a ~$250 purchase, that said I think fair price is closer to $199 TBH. Wipeout VR was pretty close to worth price of admission for me.

There seem to be pretty good deals on used ones, on one hand I can see a lot of almost new units on the used market from people that either didn't like it or got motion sickness from it (around 1/4 of the people that tried it when we first got it were hard nopes, especially if drinking). The units also seem like they'd be finicky and/or easily damaged though, so i might hesitate to roll dice on a used one. Also people are gross and there is no telling how nasty it might be.  :doge

We haven't hooked ours up in a while due to fact we play in living room, and you really have to want to set it up if it's all put away. It's a pain in the ass due to all the hookups and wires, rearranging area, etc. Basically Rock Band.

Daydream dying and Stadia VR being years out has left me in the lurch VR-wise. :'( PSVR could be my only hope...

Imo, PSVR is currently, by far the best bang for the buck.  It's got good support with a decent library now.
I'd wait to see what they'll have come this Black Friday.  I'm taking a guess that they'll have some headset bundle with 1 or 2 games for just $100 by then.

I didn't know it had become this cheap. If you can get it for $200, then go for it.

The PSVR has the highest install base of any VR device. There's probably more overall software for the various PC VR devices and definitely more variation in content. But for the best VR gaming experiences I think PSVR is the best combo of price and quality.

My next best suggestion would be the Quest, which is more expensive but is wireless and has more modern vr controllers.

BTW Free trial of FWZH this week. So if you don't have the game but have a PSVR you can experience the whole thing for free through the holiday.
