Do you care about world travel and all that BS?
« on: August 22, 2019, 04:12:06 PM »
I've traveled to most of Europe and Asia, but these days I'd rather just stay in my timezone. Find a nice cabin, lots of nature, rural setting, and I'm in heaven. Beats taking 8 plus hour flight, dealing with not knowing a language, jetlag, crowded airports, and so on. Not to mention the crowds thanks to damn Instagram.  RIP World Travel, it was fun knowing you. I'd stick to Vermont in the summers, thank you very much.

World travel is still cool, yes.

Planning a weeb trip to glorious Nippon next year. Sure jet lag, distance, TSA, border controls (or rather the person who works it. If they are chill great. If they are dicks, man I hate that feeling even when I know I haven't done anything wrong) are a hassle. I do enjoy road trips more as an experience compared to flying, but since we are talking about world travel usually a plane is necessary.
Nice thing about the time I lived in Europe was that you could train, bus, car (hell bike even) to another country no issue. And if it was far then most places were like a 3 hour plane ride at most. Now in the US again and can't really do that haha. Well those more south can hit up various countries in the Carribean within those 3 hours by plane I suppose. Us northerners can only go to Canada in that time.

If I had the $$$ to go first class, then sure.  But flying in a cattle car sucks even with my buddy Trazadone.

Sorry, breh.  Travel isn't has expensive most people think. It's never been cheaper thanks to discount airlines, AirBnB, counchsurfing, rewards points and all that.

It's BS. You'll get it out of your system in time.

did canada, mexico, peru and had a good time in each. i'd like to do more and travel across an ocean to eu or japan eventually but home ownership is more expensive than i though so i've been delayed.  :-\

i guess technically i could drive a few hours and be in mexico but el paso/juarez loses it's appeal once you are 21 and can just drink legally. also both those cities smell like poop

I have a bucket list of cities and places I'd like to visit.

So far I've not left Europe. Next year, I'm thinking Eastern Europe. Me and a buddy might hit Romania.
His parents own their own vacation house there and we can hit a EDM concert. Still early days in terms of planning though.

Now that my brother has moved to Canada, that is also in the cards but it kinda depends on if he stays there long enough for me to get enough flight 'experience' to take a 12 - 14 hour flight.

With travel, I like when I'm at the location but I hate the travel aspect of it. I guess because I got car sick when I was a kid, so there's always the reluctance to 'go somewhere far'.
Traveling around the country, both for myself and work is no problem anymore but I have yet to take a flight somewhere.

My wife and I don’t live extravagantly because we love to travel and now we take our daughter with us. We went to Japan this past November (we’ve been going every four years since 2006), spent a week in Kauai in April, did an adult weekend in San Francisco in June and we’ll be spending Thanksgiving week in Hungary, Slovakia and Poland.

last few years me and my girlfriend have been jetting off to asia for a month in autumn to basically extend summer. thailand a couple of years back, vietnam last year, malaysia this year. trying to do them one at a time so we're not repeating ourselves even if we keep it up for a decade.

it becomes a good bookmark for each year to stop them merging into one endless gloop.

People are stupid and awful everywhere, so no

that's why you go somewhere where you can't understand what they're saying.

Travel eats up the biggest part of my household budget. We just really enjoy seeing new places. I’ve been slowly inching myself into a job that is travel oriented so my wife can tag along when I go somewhere and that’s really cool. Except now I do it so often she can’t go every time and of course every place is not exciting. So I can see how the novelty might wear off. But we still have a bucket list of places to hit. Mostly Asia and Africa and I can’t see myself getting bored of that kind of traveling anytime soon. I’ve got a two week trip to China later this year that I can’t wait for.

Having said that, I would like to see glaciers before they're gone. And the spot in Ireland where my ancestor murdered his British landlord with two friends, and the monument they built to the three of them.

I'm against flying for environmental reasons nowadays.

I still plan to do some bucket list trips in the future but I wont be flying on holidays every year anymore.

Me and the wife now prefer just to spend holidays locally, within a reasonable drivinh distance.

I know people who travel to a new destination like 3 or 4 times a year... for me I enjoy traveling but it's something I can only do once every year or two. I'm not a fan of dealing with all the stress that comes from planning, FOMO, booking hotels and transfers, etc. I usually go through an agency when I do. If I'm traveling, I like to go to a place where I can get involved with the history and the culture, I have no interest in spending a bunch of $$, flying to a Caribbean island, and sitting on a beach all day. Especially since I live on an island no more than a 15 minute drive from a beach wherever you are.

That being said, I'm going on a vacation with my girlfriend to Italy in a week.

Outside of North America, I've only been to Ireland and Italy. Those were guided tours via bus. While I enjoyed it and felt like it was a good use of my money, it doesn't really let you feel what it's like to live somewhere else. It's a very sanitized version of travel.

That being said, I'd still like to do a Mediterranean cruise and Alaskan cruise one day. That's about all I am really dying to do.

I think it's important to have those big "event trips" every 5 years or so. It lets you work towards something and it lets you reflect on life while you are on the trip. It's a good way to break out of the grind. Weekend trips or short vacations in your country don't have the same kind of effect.

That's pretty aggressive!

How many international and domestic trips do you plan per year?

I'm not anti-travel btw. I'm just worn out on the whole bucket list, Instagram culture surrounding it these days. Travel also has a lot of built-in elitism about it.  You probably don't notice it as a married man, but the jokes about dating apps and travel are based on reality.

One international trip every other year is rather reasonable for me at this point in time. I used to have a very aggressive travel calendar as well. But those vacations left me worn out.

I'm also trying to take advantage of my local area via camping. So I don't mind adventure and trips.  Travel is great. World travel is fun, but it's become a religion of late thanks to social media.

Ideally, I'd love to spend more time in other countries. Maybe 3 months of the year in a second home.

I don't think it's an either/or situation.  I'm not really a consumer whore in general.  I don't have a maxed out rig.  I only recently got a 4k TV (the cheap TCLs) after rocking a 720p set for 7 years.  I run my computers until they die, etc.

You can also have great experiences in your locale.  I go to great restaurants all the time. Same with seeing art shows, performances, concerts.  And I also enjoy great public parks. I do live in a really great city, though. So I'm spoiled.

You should take a break from whatever social media is painting that picture for you.  Traveling is fun and (hopefully!) a good way to relax and enjoy getting away for a bit.

That said, I know what you mean at least when it comes to nerds and Japan.  Too often I see people treating going there like a religious experience and/or bragging about it.  Particularly some of the folks living there.  It's more "TOKYO TOKYO TOKYO TOKYO HEY I LIVE IN TOKYO OH DID U KNOW I LIVE IN TOKYO!?!?!  TOKYO!" than Japan in general, though.  It's one thing to be excited, but it's another to essentially make that your entire identity.  Like, if you took away the "TOKYO!!!" stuff from what they talk about...there wouldn't be much of anything else there.  I had a guy follow me on Twitter recently who does this.  WHY DID I FOLLOW HIM BACK?  :lol :dizzy

Tokyo has especially been hit with way more people visiting of late these days.

Great city.

That said, I do still travel and travel internationally. Just at a more reasonable pace.  And if I die without going to country/city X, it wont be the end of the world.

Great city.

Yeah, it is- and when I see say, Mr. Gundam, Beezy, or Bebpo talking about visiting, for example, it's great.  Or Chrono sharing his experiences living there.  All good stuff.

It's too bad not everyone can be like them.  :doge
