Didn't see a thread for this. The demo is out on the Switch and it's rather meaty. We can use this thread for the real game once it comes out.

I beat the PS4 version and had tons of fun. This version is adding tons of stuff:

2D Mode (not available in the demo sadly)
Fully Orchestrated OST
New Character Quests
3DS exclusive post-game quests.
New Draconian modifiers
Japanese VA (This is really well done)
New QoL improvements (faster battle option, alchemy pot anywhere)

And many others.

Quick impressions:

The Ultrafast battle option is great. Handheld mode is a bit blurry if you got used the PS4/PC version, but it's fine for me. YMMV. Docked is rather impressive. The orchestral music is a game-changer. I played this on PS4, so I was stuck with the garbage midi.

The demo is also rather long. Pretty nuts.

I'm definitely getting this again.

My Switch is installing the demo now. (Side note, I love you can install games and demos from the eShop website -- Nintendo not being completely behind on a QoL online feature is nice..)

We've been talking about it in the Switch thread- it's an amazing port-- am really impressed with how it looks and runs, although the music volume seems too loud and kind of drowns out the sound effects. Turning it down didn't seem to help that much.

Really glad I waited for this version.

They realized DQ is supposed to be fast and the original DQ11 speed was completely unacceptable?

Alchemy can be done anywhere now? Wow. Actual DQ iteration. DQ11 may be playable this time.

Looks playable.

DQ11 ps4 is the first DQ i have not beaten.

I will be playing the Switch version instead. Being able to use Alchemy any time is a great thing.

DQVIII ps2 -> alchemy pot has a timer
DQIX -> can use alchemy pot any time without timer
DQVIII 3ds -> can use alchemy pot any time without timer
DQXI ps4 -> alcchemy only available at save points

What crack were they smoking? Thankfully they unfucked themselves.

Dunno but you can run pretty fast with ZR if that wasn't in the original version.

Dashing.

Cutscenes are skippable. Erik’s quest is still there. Saves carry over which is nice if you hated that. Just play the demo and start up the full game and you’d be past it.

I haven't finished the PS4 version. The main thing that appeals to me here is the music changes, bur Jesus is the game already long.

I removed the Draconian modifiers. They are just plain unfun lol. I play DQ to relax. Not that I hate hard games. I'm a huge Souls fan. But it's just tedious here.

It's tedious because almost all RPG hard modes are dog shit. Only Souls in my experience has done a good hard mode.

The only good Draconian quest is lower exp. I tend to play DQ games "underleveled" compared to how most people are. Sometimes, just for laughs, during a DQ run, I'll go to gfaqs and check a guide and see what their level suggestions are for where I am in the game. Often, they're 10-15 levels ahead of me.

Scrubs.

Anyways RPG Hard modes are dog shit. Why? Horrible balancing. All they ever do is just give enemies entire tubs of HP. It's so fucking boring.

Stronger enemies is dumb? Everybody on rere recommended it. Thought it wasn't too bad in the demo, although some enemies like the archers seemed too powerful.

Anyway, I was a bit afraid that this game wouldn't live up to 8 (top 3 all time game for me) but the demo seemed fantastic. Undocked it's serviceable, docked really great. Love the music and the big scope in the city.

Yes most RPG hard modes are just padded numbers. Just look at Tales of series. Wowee higher numbers against your favor

Kingdom Hearts does hard modes right imo. Critical Mode is the tits

I've got about 3 hours into the demo and I like what the game's doing, it has an old-school feel but with some modern updates to keep it from feeling dated. I don't really have any point of comparison to the rest of the DQ series since the last one I put any significant time into was the original NES release way back in the very early 90s. Probably gonna go ahead and buy the full version next month.

I have to accept that it's the first Dragon Quest I don't like. It undoes everything I love about Dragon Quest.

I still want to see it to the end though. Mostly because of brand loyalty. I think I'll buy it and support the game - and in the end, the franchise - and just push through despite whatever negativity I have towards it.
