while similar, disco leans more pop and funk leans more soul (plus a heavier bass focus). dufus wasn't able to detect the soul because the dutch don't have those.

Not to turn into Cindi but Earl Young, who is black, kicked off disco with his four on the floor beat after ten prior years of funk left it stale and in crisis. Funk was pioneered by James Brown, who is also black. Not only did he get the order mixed up but he got the races mixed up too (white people got in on disco after black people and mixed groups like Sly and the Family Stone got it going).

One of massive special fellow pet peeves is white people getting funk and disco mixed up.

White dudes on r/guitar and guitar websites worship Nile Rodgers as some Funk God (he is but still) when Chic was a fucking disco group. Their inability to see past their (unearned and ignorant) hate for disco leaves them mixing the two and it drives me insane.

I like to separate them in the sense that funk, traditionally, had a black power/pro-black empowerment mantra. Whereas disco mostly was just rocking your balls and tits off. There’s no empowerment, for the most part, besides Diana Ross records. Whereas funk was empowerment distilled.

Disco borrowed heavily from funk so it gets even murkier but a lot of it feels like an attitude.
