Is Billie Eilish the greatest talent since Prince died?
« on: September 26, 2019, 04:37:01 PM »
She came out with Ocean Eyes at the age of 14. 14, guys. When I was 14 I spent 12 hours a day arguing about whether Trump could win the Republican primary.

Then at 17 she dropped a genre-defining album with 5 Top 40 singles on it, including probably the best song of the last few years in Bad Guy.

She might not play as many instruments, but I'm getting Prince in Purple Rain vibes from her.

She comes from a family that has ties to the music business. She lives in the LA area. Yes the label is pushing her hard. She didn't come up through the underground and "pay her dues", but it's not like she ever claimed that like Rick Ross who is a fake gangsta.  :idont

Either way, she's just a home schooled kid. I'll check back to see what she's up to when she's a young adult musically. Current Billie doesn't mean much to me.

Edit: Her brother who is an adult is pretty much the production side of things. So yes marketing and brand-wise it's Billie, but the music project is very much a sibling duo.

Listening to this dumb girl gush about how Eilish is 'so talented' was one of the worst experiences of my life. I guess people just believe what they're told, and they respond to what they see (ridiculous outfits). I'd never heard the term "industry plant" before a few weeks ago, but if it has a wiki page, she'd be the thumbnail.

That Bad Guy song she did was ok but not much different from a lot of other modern music.

However looking at the video clips I guess she escaped from Epstein island. :thinking

I think that's pretty much the big thing that bums me out about her music is that it's kinda used by people as a fashion statement which to me is (god forgive me for using this word unironically) gross. Though I don't necessarily put the onus on a teenage girl who has a whole bunch of grownups around her navigating her at this point of her life. It does suck that depression is used as sort of a hot topic wristband as some kind of cool personality battle scar. Depression is awful. There is nothing cool about depression.

For pop acts mostly you just need auto tune and a dad with industry connections.

That seems to define a lot of pop acts. Especially ones that blow up

Disagree. The internet has been good to independent artists and we haven't had this explosion of musical diversity in a long time. People are sincerely making money on originality like never before.

It's helped independent artists incidentally, but the other bullshit has been amplified hundred-fold. I get that press junkets aren't going anywhere, and that musicians live in an attention economy that thrives on self-aggrandizement and devalues earnestness, but I don't have to like it.

I don't know about making money - the spotify streaming model is dirt and it's messed up a couple genres imo. Rap mixtapes with 36 meh tracks are a thing now and it sucks :(

On the other hand, making music and getting it out there is easier than ever before, and I think there's a good niche to be made if you can carve out a niche and get your merch game going.
Most money for artists these days comes from live performances (I've seen it estimated at 85% or so). So the internet gives these people exposure and then they can book venues. For instance I feel like Brockhampton was absolutely an internet phenomenon (and before them, Odd Future).

what, if anything it's as close to a meritocratic system as you can get in music

I listened to a couple of songs and i don't understand what would set her apart from every other similar growly, disinterested singer.
I saw some people were calling her a genius, i'm not sure why.

Then again i usually listen to very different music in the first place, so i'm probably not equipped to get it.

Plot Twist: It was the 2000 election cycle and Shosta really wanted Trump to run as a Republican instead of for the Reform Party. In some timelines the Trump Dynasty began in 2000, but we're in the Terminator 3 timeline where Judgement Day got delayed for 16 years, when time-traveling robot from the future Hillary Clinton failed to stop it for a second time.
