Climate Crisis thread
« on: October 31, 2019, 02:34:03 AM »
It occurred to me were really fucked, climate already changed so much since I was a kid that all these half assed measures governments are taking wont have effect before the second half of the century and tje climate is going to be wild by then if it keeps changing like this.

Were being led to the slaughter in the name of capitalism.

We're gonna be relatively OK up north. I'm more worried about how we're going to change when even more refugees try to come in.

Indonesia is going to be the most 'interesting' one to watch, I think. Island nation AND on the equator. And a populace of more than 260 million.

I’ll still be here in 30 years to laugh at you all.

I’m sure by then they will concoct some new rationale on why the predictions haven’t happened yet and you’ll all buy-in and call me a fool. I saw it happen in the last 20 years when the climate didn’t follow the models of the 90s  and then you saw a rash of studies saying all the predicted heat was trapped in the ocean.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

It won't be some planet ender like some people hyperbolize it to be, but rather some shit times in the not-so-near future.
Climate, shits complicated yo. Greenhouse effect is pretty straightforward but the complexity of factors involved becomes evident when you look at things on a large timescale in which case you can twist things to whatever angle you please.

Listen man, 25 years ago I used to ice skate every winter on natural ice, on rivers and lakes. Now there is barely snow in winter.

In France they have to reinforce thousands of ski lifts, even some built in the 90s, because the "perma" frost they were embedded in is gone and they are starting to become unstable.

I've been into paleontology a lot lately and it honestly has me a bit scared.  If you look at something recent like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleocene%E2%80%93Eocene_Thermal_Maximum and then look at the amount of greenhouse gasses we are putting in the atmosphere in a much much shorter time span, then its hard not to be worried.  I don't drive, and I've started to cut back on meat and airconditioning but there is not much else I can do personally; and its not like personal choices will really make a difference.

I have an employee/co-worker who's really stressed out about this climate thing. Wants me to do vegan lunches on monday and just today started complaining about how many leftover bread gets tossed in the trash on fridays.
There's a simple explanation for that. Everyone likes a different type of bread and when I'm at the bakery I also bring all sorts of other snacks so we might not eat our regular sandwiches anyway.

I'm like gurl, have you ever seen what the supermarket dumps in the trash every single day? A few loafs of bread is nothing.
She always gets triggered when I tell her that her not eating hamburgers is not going to make any difference for the climate if I eat 2.
Those people get really high on regulations and the thoughts of banning things such as cars, smoking, drinking, meat and any type of fun.

It seems that the church has been replaced with the cult of climate.
I'm expecting eco-terrorism at some point with radical lefties RAF guerrilla style bombing McDonalds and stuff or mass suicide by climate people trying to save the planet by reducing their own carbon footprint.
They are completely crazy and obsessed with this stuff and just endlessly frustrated with people like me.

Your claims:
1. Major climate predictions made in the 90s were wrong.
2. The 90s models didn't account for the ocean's role as a heat sink. These were hastily added over a decade later to explain the failed predictions post-hoc.

First, the oceans. Here is what Hansen had to say in 1988 about the role of ocean heat transfer:
Quote
In this paper we study the response of a 3D global climate model to realistic rates of change of radiative forcing mechanisms. The transient response of the climate system on decadal times scales depends crucially on the response of the ocean, for which adequate understanding and dynamical models are not available. Our procedure is to use simple assumptions about ocean heat transport. Specifically we assume that during the next few decades the rate and pattern of horizontal ocean heat transport will remain unchanged and the rate of heat update by the ocean beneath the mixed layer can be approximated by diffusive mixing of heat perturbations. This "surprise-free" representation of the ocean provides a first estimate of the global transient climate response which can be compared both to observations and to future simulations developed with a dynamically interactive ocean.

So already by 1988 the role of the ocean was well understood (and of course it would have been, this is very simple thermodynamics here). That's your first mistake. Hansen acknowledged that the ocean isn't just a simple heat sink, it's its own oscillatory system with complicated dynamics between surface and deep water. In any case, the first time the IPCC
Hansen's specific predictions run a little high (maybe ~20%), but luckily in an appendix he provided formula so that people could rerun his model with updated emissions data. That is exactly what someone did in one of the links I

From my recollection of last year (when the anniversary brought it back into light), people charted his prediction using linear growth and not cumulative growth. If it was down by cumulative growth it would be shown as such.

I always like this angle. Sticking to the basics and avoiding the complexities and points of arguments that spring up like we can see above.
Yes, that means you Adam. Whether or not the planet will literally be Venus in 100 years isn't the point of contention, just that the basics like drinkable water, breathable air, green things in the future would be nice.

Solar activity probably isn't something you can rule out for obvious reasons, but there is the rub. You can go down various tangents that you can't really test 100% since you can't control solar output. But you can remember you breathe air and even if the air won't flash combust you it sucks ass if it is brutal on your lungs.

Solar activity influences cloud formation and clouds play huge role in our climate. It’s not even a process we fully understand or bake accurately into the climate models yet.

Also, my bone of contention with the subject has always been the hyper-focus on Co2. It’s the cart, not the horse. That energy (human capital and plain capital) should be directed more towards reducing particulate pollution (soot), encouraging better land use and examining our affect on the hydrosphere. We’re dredging untold millions of liters of water from the earth on the daily and not thinking about the ramifications of it

When did I post it? Because warming quit happening at the same rate for a decade or more in the 00’s, there were many studies trying to find where that “missing heat” went. Many came to the conclusion it got buried in the deep ocean.

There are millions (billions?) of people in this world who burn their garbage, in the open air, daily. You should never feel guilty because you take a trip on an airplane once or twice a year.

Quote
The study concluded that as much as 29 percent of human-related global emissions of small particulates (less than 2.5 microns in diameter) come from the (trash) fires, as well as 10 percent of mercury and 40 percent of a group of gases known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Anyone else trying to cut out flying from their holidays?

I actually feel a bit ashamed about all the flying ive done so far. Then I feel like a hypocrite because I traveled to a lot of places but would everyone to travel less (by plane).

That said I think sustainability is a myth, for us to live we have to consume. What we can do though is do our best to keep the world healthy.
The plane will fly even if you're not on it. So just take the plane and enjoy yourself.
